Avoiding the Qantas 787

I am wondering how long it will take Qantas to realize that the 787 economy seats are a mistake and move to fix them.

NEVER after all what other airline in the world has changed them? And lets face it there are plenty of mugs out there that wouldn't know what plane they were booked on and no idea what the seats are like on other aircraft or airlines. As others have said we here on AFF represent a very small number of Qantas customers over all.

Spoke to a friend this morning who is going to UK later this year on QF 9/10 in Y we talked about the seats etc and his comment was yes but its Qantas and Qantas dont crash...

I think the sales of “comfort seats”may increase once the word gets out. That may take a year or two.
None of our work staff would willingly go on their 787 in Y even though it is “new” and that is just for flights across Australia

They won't fix them. I'm surprised that there haven't more negative reviews on the 17 hour flight.

A very long time given its the standard, and pax aren't going to pay 10% higher fares
Aren't they? How would QF know ? Have they ever asked?

I've completed QF surveys where they ask if I'd pay more to earn status credits, for wifi, for food, or pay less to do without. They've never asked if or how much extra I'd pay for more space.

They could do something like AAs "Main Cabin Extra" and set up the 5 economy rows in front of door 3 (the mini Y cabin behind premium economy) with 8 across and keep the rest at 9 across.

I'm surprised they havent worked out Y+ needs a few more inches room

Y isnt going to change.

Flew on QF10 from LHR-PER in Y last month.
Luckily between my partner and I had 3 seats between 2 of us, but definitely not comfortable if there was a 3rd person sat.
Won't be taking the chance and flying on a QF 787 in Y again

And so continues the uniformly negative reviews of the QF787 in Y. What a disaster this could turn out to be for QF. After all, one of the reasons people are willing to pay a bit more for Y in QF than other carriers is the perceived 'premium' experience. No more.

Well, have just done QF9 in Y, first time on a 787, and I have to say it wasn't what I expected after all the negativity.
- Flight was very full so no empty seat next to me, but surprised it didn't really feel notably different to the A380 in width.
- seat pitch and tray design yield significantly more leg space. Storage tray for glasses/ phones is great and extra spots for water bottle etc.
- Foot net is basically the same as in the A380 and worked well as an alternate leg position periodically.
- had no issues with cushion comfort. I initially thought it was soft at the front and would lack leg support, but actually this ended up greatly enhancing the comfort and I had none of the dead leg/bum issues I've had on the A380.
- PE must have been using J loos and negligible queues for Y ones. Toilets were kept clean though there is already evidence of more systemic lack of bathroom cleaning that would be a turnaround type job.
- 787 is noisier than I expected given all the hype.
- crew was excellent. Status acknowledged, pre ordered meals delivered etc
- PER transit lounge is a dungeon, nicer watching the sunset from the main level. Food seemed hopeless and little touched by most.
- small plane so quick to load, unload, smaller inherent queues during processing and luggage out very quickly.

Just MHO.

Completely agree with all of the posts about biased reviews, How is it expected one would write an unbiased review when they are given a free flight?. Reading this post now has me slightly PO that I've booked a return trip to LHR through PER. Kind of wish I didn't now!

Looking forward to the report afterwards!

Ryan you could buy a comfort additional seat or hope the load is light on your flights. You may be able to get the comfort seat for about $1,200.

I have done this for the flight home to compare the true experience. WIll definitely post once the trip is over

Was the $1,200 figure close or was it more like $2,000?
With a comfort seat you only pay the base fare.

The current cheapest base fare from SYD using QF9/QF10 is $1080.

For a revenue fare, the +++ adds about $360 - Biggest component being UK "reduced" APD of $140.

I agree. Most of the articles I've read sound more like "Thank You'' letters than flight reviews.

Just booked QF 128 on the 787, reward seat. Rows 1 to 5 are unavailable to me, I don’t normally do QF rewards why are they blocked off and would they open up later? in the meantime is 7A a good solo seat?
