This thread is closed and I have some more questions

I have a friend who has moved to London and will be doing a lot of international flights. He is mid 30s so got some time to do this

I'm struggling to understand the difference between GGL and gold - has anyone got any tips for me to explain it to him please

Paging @JessicaTam

GGL is like P1 vs Gold which is like WP.
I don’t believe lifetime GGL exists but lifetime Gold does, so they could go for that if it’s realistic.

BA has two lifetime statuses/statusi.

Gold for life, and lifetime Gold Guest List.

As @Cynicor has stated there is a difference between Gold and GGL.

Status is earned with Tier Points (TPs) which are pretty equivalent to QF's Status Credits.

Gold is OneWorld Emerald with all the benefits that entails. You will need 1500TPs to obtain and to retain in one membership year. Note that from next year, all memberships will be from 1/4 to 31/3

At 2500TPs you get a GUF2 (Gold Upgrade For 2 pax). This allows a space-available upgrade on an itinerary with (generally) BA metal for two people. There are other details which I won't go into here.

At 3500TPs you get 2x GUF1s (Gold Upgrade For 1 pax). These can be used by solo travelers.

At 5000TPs you become Gold Guest List (but only need 3000TPs to retain). This gives you access to choose any seat in your cabin, incl front row. You also have access to a dedicated team who will sort any problems for you (on a BA ticket). Plus you get access to the Concorde Room and its derivations in LHR T5 and T3, SIN and JFK. The lounge in LHR T5 equates to QF's First lounges in MEL, SYD and SIN. Finally a GGL has 2x 'Jokers'. That is, they can request the release of award seats if there is a revenue seat available in that cabin. This is pretty much guaranteed, so no going cap-in-hand like a QF P1 hoping for the release. ;)

Gold for life (GfL) is obtained at 35,000TPs and lifetime GGL at 100,000TPs. There is no lower lifetime status with BA.

So if your friend can manage about 10-12 years as a GGL they will manage GfL. 30 years and they get close to lifetime GGL.

Edit: for reference QF LT Ruby 7,000SCs; LT Sapphire 14,000SCs; LT Emerald 75,000SCs.

Nice Cliff Notes. Thanks.

Thanks for all your clarification everyone

I was recently a guest at the Concorde Room at LHR, and I must say I was impressed with the hard and soft product. BA seems to do best when connected with the UK. Gatwick also has a great lounge, with some of the best airport views around.

After a comfortable yet poorly catered flight from DFW to LHR in their First Class, I enjoyed exploring Europe on their CityFlyer service. The impeccable catering and polish of the 'older' crew more than made up for the so-so-hard product and impressed me once again.

That could be sufficient incentive to chase longer-term status on BA.
