From News.com.au ....

IF Australia's cricketers bundle England out for a paltry first innings in the Ashes decider, get set for a rush on flights to Britain.
But the rush has nothing to do with Australians eager to witness the fifth Ashes Test starting in London tonight Australian time.

British Airways will offer flights from Sydney and Melbourne to London for prices equivalent to England's first innings total in the final Test.

If the Poms are scuttled for 150, the cost of a flight from Sydney or Melbourne to London will be £150 ($361.66).

No, some of us had to grab some sleep  ...and I'd stay it's pretty even at 7 for 319

I guess the number of seats available will be directly proportional to the score.

I believe this relates on a 1 - 1 basis to the other side's 1st innings runs.

Here is a link
And I am expecting that Australia's score will be somewhat proportional to that of Eggland given that state of play at the end of day 1. The more runs the poms can get, the more runs the Aussies should be able to dig out. Well that is my hope anyway, but given how the Wallabies and Lions have gone recently, and the Broncos are on a 5 game losing streak, I should expect to disappointed with the cricket result  .

I'm not a cricket person (AFL is my game) but can someone please explain the final score in terms of how much a ticket to London will cost (in pounds) and how many tickets will be available?

Regards
Daniel

However many runs England makes in their first innings is the cost of the return fares in pounds. However many runs Australia makes in their first innings is the number of tickets that will be available for that price.

So England is currently at 317 with three batsman left to be removed before their innings is closed. So if Warnie gets a hat-trick in the first over of the morning, the fare could be as low as 317 pounds.

Thanks. Also, are the tickets one way or return? I suspect it is one way.

They are Return.

See T&C at https://www.britishairways.com/travel/ba6.jsp/ashespromotcs/public/en_gb

NOTE: These Terms and Condtions are if you are in the UK. I couldn't find the T&C's on the Australian Website. However I presume the UK rules would be the same as the AUS rules.

Anyway's if you want to travel:

"A phone line dedicated to the Ashes offer, 1300 767 177, will open at 9am AEST Monday and tickets will be restricted to a maximum of two a caller."

So the fare is going to be 373 pounds. Now to find out just how many seats to be sold at that price - at least 112 as at tea when bad light stopped play.

#373 pounds = AU$898 ish

Any updates on how many tickets will be available?

Also, anyone know if there are any date restrictions? Ie. Can only fly between these dates (etc).

Regards
Daniel

The UK T&C (which should be the same for the offer here), are as follows:

https://www.britishairways.com/travel/ba6.jsp/ashespromotcs/public/en_gb

Terms and conditions

1. Promotion is open to UK & Republic of Ireland residents aged 18 or over.

2. Promotional ticket prices will be the same as the total number of runs that Australia score in their first innings at the final test of the Ashes 2005 at The Oval; the number of promotional tickets will be limited to the number of runs that England score in their first innings in the final test of the Ashes 2005 at The Oval.

3. Promotional tickets will be available to purchase 1 hour after the first innings are completed; call 0870 850 2427 to purchase.

4. Participants are limited to a maximum of 2 tickets per call.

5. Promotional tickets are return flights in World Traveller from London to Sydney or Melbourne and includes all applicable taxes, fees and charges. Valid for travel from 19th September 2005 until 30th March 2005, excluding 9th - 23rd December 2005.

6. Bookings cannot be changed or refunded. No stopovers.

7. Valid on flights operated only by British Airways; excludes codeshare partners.

8. Flight bookings cannot be changed, refunded or transferred. All flights are subject to availability.

9. All travel is subject to BA's general conditions of carriage for passengers and baggage (copies available on request) and the notice and conditions of contract contained on each ticket and itinerary.

10. This promotion will be governed by English law and the English courts have jurisdiction to hear any disputes in relation to it.

And with the fall of the first Aussie wicket (at 180 runs) and rain halting play about 20 mins ago, I'd think BA are increasing the discount they are going to give the market. However, with their brilliant marketing coup that saw them grab front page space for almost no cost, they are still a looong way ahead.

One good way to get bums on seats after the catering disaster  .

Anyone bother trying to get a ticket? My flight landed just after 9am and I forgot to make the call so either way I figured I missed out.

Regards
Daniel

And it seems that VS is also trying to get into the act. According to this posting on another BB:

According to today's Sunday Telegraph, VS is offering a similar deal to BA's Ashes special fare.

VS is taking $20 off its $1760 SYD-LHR return fare for every wicket Warney takes in this Ashes series. Before the start of the 5th test, Warney has taken 28 wickets, so the discount is already $560. In the 1st inning of the 5th test, Warney took 6 wickets, so that's another $120 off.

The number of tickets available will be calculated in a similar way (ie: 20 tickets for every Warney wicket). Bookings available from next Tuesday.
I don't have the paper to verify the info, nor could I find any reference on the VS web site. But this type of promotion is what I would expect from VS.
