BA "overseas transaction charge" ?

Just got stuck with the overseas transaction fee too! Aargh it's my own fault for not reading the fees booklet properly, but it's still annoying.

Purchased from asos.com , the transaction was denominated and charged in AUD but still got the fee just because the merchant was overseas. Never even crossed my mind that such a fee would exist as I have never experienced this on other cards.

Live and learn I guess...

Interesting thread....I don't have a Woolworths Qantas MC but would be pretty pi$$ed off to have to pay a 3% Fx fee (rip off:evil:) if billed in AUD from an overseas site.

I just took it to be a weird Expedia thing when it happened for an expedia.com.au booking (of a BA flight LHR-FRA) but this discussion has made it clear that the Everyday Rewards card that is the odd one out (my Westpac Earth card never had fees for using Expedia.com.au before).

Guess the card will be relegated to domestic in-store shopping until I cancel it at the end of its year (unless they offer me another good deal to renew fee free again, which is what happened last year when I went to cancel it).

This is not HSBC/WOW specific...

Bankwest, ANZ, CBA, Nab etc all charge various fees for transactions performed/'collected' overseas where they are in AUD.

I've never had this happen with my American Express issued cards or my Citibank card.

Obviously this doesn't apply to the 28 Degrees card or cards like Platinum cards issued by Bankwest where they waive this fee for any transactions that are performed 'overseas' (whether AUD or other currency).

Not quite true I thought. Do ANZ charge the fee for AUD denominated purchases? I only very rarely use the ANZ CCs but haven't noticed any fee.

Overseas Transaction fee – Visa and Mastercard transactions
• ANZ will charge 3% of the value of any foreign or
Australian currency transaction
charged to ANZ
Visa, ANZ MasterCard or ANZ Visa PAYCARD
credit card where the merchant or financial
institution accepting the card is located outside
of Australia.

• For an overseas ATM transaction the Overseas
Transaction Fee is calculated on the value of the
transaction and any ATM operator fee that you
accept when you proceed with the transaction
at the ATM.
Overseas Transaction fee – American express®
• American Express will charge 1.5% of the value
of any foreign or Australian currency transaction
charged to your ANZ American Express credit
card where the merchant or financial institution
accepting the card is located outside of Australia.
• ANZ will charge 1.5% of the value of any foreign
or Australian currency transaction charged to
your ANZ American Express credit card where
the merchant or financial institution accepting
the card is located outside of Australia.
• Please note that the ANZ and American Express
Overseas Transaction fees will be combined for
each transaction and displayed as one fee on
the statement. A charge that is made in a foreign
currency other than US Dollars will, when the
conversion is done by American Express, be
converted into US Dollars before being
converted into your billing currency.

They sure do - direct text from the fees and charges document for ANZ Cards...

I have also been charged this fee when I have paid my onboard account on P&O cruises Pacific Sun in March. The ship is Australian based, fares paid in Australia to P&O The ship never left Queensland waters but because the owner is Carnival USA you get charged the fee.

Fair enough. Obviously I don't use that card enough when overseas. Really only ever use my Citi, 28 degrees and Amex for foreign transactions, and the 28 degrees most frequently.
