Personally, hardly ever travel with checked in baggage but couldn't help notice the following article

http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2006/01/21/1137734189841.html

Cites a BA 747 having to travel after 2 hr delay with no baggage cos the SYD system so poor!!!

Why are we paying all those stupid airport fees for such a joke???

SACL's (Mac Bank) profits are huge!!!

Also safety side a worry - lots of ground crew safety officers pensioned off - one day......

Like yourself, I endeavour at all times to just have carry-on baggage ... whether flying domestic or international.

If I do have to pick up bags at Sydney Int, then I take a casual stroll down to Duty Free to do a bit of window shopping and max out my booze entitlement, coz sure as eggs the conveyer belt won't even start for at least half an hour.

The real pain would be having to queue for up to an hour just to check in. Avoiding that farce is worth the entry fee for Qantas Club on its own.

Cheers,

AC

You've all read my story about Sydney Airport misconnecting my baggage recently...

Congratulations Sydney Airport. May you get a swift kick up the *)& and be forced to pay compensation to airlines like the article suggests.

That is the only way to ensure baggage properly moves at the airport.

having travelled around the world every year for the past eight years the only baggage problems i have had has allways been at LHR

I'll clarify my comment a little.

Baggage gets lost. It's a fact of flying.

What my issue is with SYD's bags is that they have lost so many since the beginning of December.

Such a documented problem needs to be resolved. Australia cannot afford to have that many bags lost at our major airport.

They cant afford to have significant numbers of flights delayed for baggage problems either.

I've never had a problem with checked baggage getting on-board outbound flights (touch wood!) but I have had to wait quite a while for my bag to appear on the carousel on inbound flights at SYD T1.

However last Weds evening I was first person off the aircraft, and first through immigration, and I only had to wait for about 3 mins at the carousel, so it's not always bad news. I was outside the terminal in less that 10 mins of the aircraft docking.

When you compare to other international terminals, SYD T1 is beginning to look tired and outdated IMO, and a bit of mess in terms of design. I wonder if the baggage handling system is similarly old and in need of a total refurb or replacement?

Maybe it is not a tired system but handlers spending too long looking for camel heads?

I guess that incident wasn't funny to the person who owned the camel head, but I found it pretty funny. Wish I'd actually seen it happen. :D
