Bad service in Mel

I thought that all flights departing for Tel Aviv need to have a special baggage inspection process. I believe the luggage screening in SYD would not be adequate or meet the Israeli governments requirements, so perhaps the luggage had to be checked back in at BKK so the more rigorous screening could take place?

When I was departing LHR in December on Asiana, the El AL airline counters were in the same area of the terminal. There were armed guards with machine guns, every bag was being hand searched and there was a special x-ray machine and everything! Full on. I read somewhere that this was a government requirement due to security / terrorism concerns, and has been this way for ages (I can't find the article sorry).

When flying any other airline the LY security team doesn't have access to the luggage, so it doesn't matter if it is checked in by QF in MEL/SYD of by RJ in BKK.

When flying with LY they do have their own team of ex-military security guards who asks some questions like: did you pack your bags yourself?, were you asked to give anything to anyone?
They can also run the luggage through a separate x-ray, and ask to open and check it.

I find it hard to believe that any country will allow any foreign airline staff to carry weapons in their airports.
I never saw them carry weapons even in TLV but I do know for a fact that they have a few well hidden sniper posts on the top corners of the check in terminal.

Nothing new. I had QF insist they couldn't through check my bags connecting on an S7 flight - and again, they'd never heard of them. No biggie.
