Bag transfer LGA to JFK

Hi,
Been lucky to grab a J *1 award for my better 1/2s 60th in Sep this year. We are flying DCA to LGA then JFK to LAX, SYD and AKL. I'm hopeful the bags will be checked in at DCA then picked up in AKL and in particular be transferred from LGA to JFK so we can have most of the day in NY! It's all on one ticket so despite the *1 bag transfer issues that should happen shouldn't it?

Bags won't be transferred between LGA and JFK, unfortunately.

You will have to find your own way at your own additional cost between LGA and JFK with your luggage.
They will not tag your bags for JFK-LAX-SYD-AKL at DCA. That is done on checkin at JFK
How much time do you have between LGA and JFK. Allow a minimum of 1 hour travel time

QF JFK checkin opens from 1400hrs

Taxi is pretty much the only way to do it. Is quite time consuming. What time are your flights?

Or Rideshare. There are buses too. No trains.

Noted you want to spend time in NYC.

Either store your luggage at a nearby LGA hotel (day stay room) or hire a car at LGA, put your luggage in the car and park the car at LGA.
Pickup on way back to LGA.

Thanks, get into LGA at 10.23am, leave JFK on QF12 at 6.30pm so plenty of time at least. Might leave the bags in a locker at JFK and have 3 or 4 hours in the city.

Brilliant!!! get to JFK, luggage storage at T1 and T4 then catch the air train into NYC

I can't think of any city with multiple airports where baggage is transferred between them for connections.

Better to get a taxi or direct shuttle to JFK, get bags into storage then get the LLRR into Manhattan for a few hours (Jamaica Station, transfer point between the LLRR, JFK Airtrain and subway).

Search on Google for luggage storage in Manhattan , there are a number of places in a range of locations. Depending on where you are planning to visit in NYC, you might be better off to go straight to one such location than using storage at JFK or LGA, as it saves backtracking. Alternatively you might find day use of hotel in a suitable location - although might be exxy (one place to look could be dayuse.com)

Thanks for that, it's another good plan to consider. We will take our pick on the day I think depending on mood, weather etc but we now have some good options now rather than having to research from cold.

I’m not sure AA reducing its services at JFK is going to work out well for them. They’re effectively killing NY as a viable hub.

Not exactly the same, but Continental used to offer connections to Amtrak trains (mostly towards Washington DC), from Newark/EWR. In that case your bag was transferred from airport to the train station and onto the train into the train's checked baggage car - very convenient, although MCT's between plane and train were fairly large, to allow this transfer to work. Later, Amtrak stopped offering checked baggage service on most of their trains on this route, so this service was discontinued.
