Been lurking here a while now, and the trip in question was made possible by the knowledge here, so thanks in advance!

I have two separate award bookings: SYD - HKG in J, and HKG - CTS in Y the next morning (<24 hours later). Will Cathay let me check a bag all the way to CTS if each leg is on a separate booking? If so, I assume they'd bump me down to the economy weight limit?

Cheers.

As it is a separate booking with a stopover, I believe the answer to your question is no.

Firstly I can't see why luggage won't be through checked on a CX to CX connection.

If for some reason luggage is not checked through then one option to investigate is using the transfer counters in HKG to obviously checkin for onward flight and transfer luggage.

I have done this many times but never with an overnight transit.

As JohnK says - there is no reason in principle why CX can't/won't check bags to another CX (or KA) flight, even on separate tickets.

The only issue will be the length of time they are willing to hold those bags during a transit in HKG. Some airlines/airports have specific restrictions, sometimes max 12 hours, but sometimes a lot longer - I don't the ones for HKG. They will advise you at check-in.

If they do agree to hold the bags for the duration, make sure you check at the gate, before boarding, that they have your bags on board. have your bag tag(s) ready to show them so they can make sure it's on.

Good to know. Thanks all!

Worst case I'll lug it into town on the airport express and check it straight in at the station.
