Baggage transfer at MEL QF to EK

Are there still issues with QF baggage transfers or have these been largely sorted. MrsM@MissM are concerned about losing luggage and as such have asked me to take one of the bags. My selfish dilemma is:

1. I can through check their bag and on arrival at MEL go straight to the F lounge (depending on opening times) or the Dom J until the F lounge opens.
2. Collect their bag at MEL and then wait for the EK checking to open (about an hour later).

If the baggage handling issues are largely sorted I will likely go for option 1.

Melbourne is easy for a transfer of bags. Personally I'd just get them checked-in from the other port.
