Bassinet seat selection

Hi all, I've read some old posts on here and trying to avoid calling in if I can...is it correct that I won't be able to tell if there is in fact a bassinet on my flight by looking at the seating legend online?

Looking at SYD-SFO in August (QF73&QF74) and first time travelling with bubs so trying to narrow down an airline/flight which definitely has a bassinet option then I know I have to call to request a bassinet seat subject to availability.
I'm silver status and points club plus but I know that's nothing too special.

HI Robin, having gone through this process myself I'll tell you what i know.

If you are travelling internationally you almost certainly would have bassinets available on the flight, whether you are able to get one or not is another matter. When you book you will be able to ascertain the plane you are travelling on, likely a dreamliner 787 or A380 which will tell you the position and how many bassinets are available. Bassinets are typically available in all classes - economy, PE and Business.

If you are booking online you will not be able to reserve a bassinet on booking and you will definitely have to call to request one. When you make the request it will not be confirmed until potentially even 24 hrs prior to the flight leaving, as far as i'm aware Qantas will allocate Bassinet seats by childrens age with youngest children given priority.

I rang the airline for our July flight a few days ago when it was reported that there was no wait .... and I got straight through and was able to quickly and easily put our request in. Hopefully with a 5month old and flying business we will be able to get a bassinet!

Slightly off-topic but if you are flying with a bub and hoping to snag a bassinet it may be worth investing in one of these CoziGo - Airplane bassinet cover for flying with a baby

We have done a couple of UK trips with an infant and there was a screen on the bulkhead right above the bassinet showing the flight path etc. Even when the cabin lights were dimmed the screen was brightly lit.

Even further off-topic - bring double the amount of clothing changes that you currently plan to!

Thank you, I've heard of the cozigo a few times now as well as the tip about bringing alot of clothes! Ah I'm so nervous but I'm guessing its one of those things that you just gotta do to know how easy/hard it is.

Traveling with an infant will be completely different to your pre-parenting experiences but we found that flight crew and airport staff to be really helpful and understanding. Everything just takes a bit longer than you will be used to e.g. security, getting organised once you have boarded.

Wish I'd known about Cozigo when we flew with babies. Jerry-rigged a sarong with sticky tape to the bulkhead as the light from the galley shone all night!

Oh, and not just extra clothes for the baby, extra clothes for yourselves and zip-locks for dirty clothes! Nothing like getting spewed on mid-flight.

Haha yep I've also been told to make sure we have change of clothes too, new toys, lots of snacks.
