My husband and I are flying from Narita to Cairns. We land in Cairns very early in the morning before boarding our connecting flight to Brisbane. Does anyone know if there are shower facilities available to the general public other than the lounges offered by QANTAS and Virgin?

I'm not aware of anything, other than in the lounges. Does your connecting flight from Cairns to Brisbane depart from the international terminal by chance? If so, you would theoretically be able to purchase access to the Reef Lounge which has showers.
Otherwise, your best bet is probably to get into the Qantas Club somehow.
You may wish to see if anyone is going to be flying out of CNS on the same day and willing to guest you into the lounge in our lounge meetups forum.
