With the ease of booking flights, hotels etc. online, can someone shed light on the pros re using a travel agent?
Can they get a better price for you? Do they work on commission from the airline, hotel etc they book you with or is their commission included in the price the customer pays?

The following pros are if you travel frequently and have found a good agent...

  • Can make bookings all on one PNR which the customer could never do via websites
  • Often knows the area and can advise on good vs bad places to stay
  • Can find hotels during times when vacancy is low
  • Can often do as good deal as what you'd find on the web
  • If something goes wrong during the trip you have someone who can call to resolve issues.
  • A good agent knows your travel preferences and will book accordingly.
Of course get a bad TA (and they do exist, I have used a few) then all these advantages go out the window.

Yes most travel, certainly the less complex can be self booked online and self managed ...

However as mentioned it generally involves time researching elements from many sites and possibly inputing multiple fields repeatedly for each component.

Travel agents mostly utilise GDS booking systems which interface deep into many airline inventory systems and can therefore access a much higher level of data. Airline public web booking engines are basically designed to be used by "dummies" with a low level of access and very strict controls over inputs/outputs. Multiple sectors (air and land) across multiple carriers and suppliers can be booked in a single PNR via a GDS ... with stored personal profile info being transmitted to relevant suppliers ... FF numbers, seating and other preferences etc. Also when the **** hits the fan as in the recent Qantas grounding its good to have someone on the inside looking after your rebooking options etc, beats waiting in the phone holding pattern for xx_ amount of time. TA's will mostly also have comprehensive back office systems that are designed specifically for the management and accounting of travel bookings.

Most TA's these days operate within large buying and marketing groups, there are very few fully independant agents. These groups have much greater leverage than most end users even large corporates. And airlines, hotels, car rental groups and other suppliers usually have specific agency account managers to sort any issues. Most TA groups will have access to unpublished, nett and even privately negotiated fares at times. Most agency groups have specialist "fares" desks staffed by airfare experts who spend their days working out the best options on complex routings. Agency groups will generally also have access to hotel deals and at times have allocations of rooms which can be very beneficial when demand is high.

Agents by and large work for relatively low rates of remuneration vs the knowledge and complexity of the tasks they perform. Yes they are paid commissions on some products and this was tradionally the way agents earnt their revenue. Over the past decade this has been changing and many suppliers are squeezing or eliminating commission payments and many agents will now charge fees for service. Generally the fees they charge will be offset by what they will save by being able to access better priced travel products and by saving you the time trying to find it all and piece it together.

But having said that many travellers enjoy the research and planning themselves and many are happy to and capable of managing their own travel arrangments. There is no right or wrong, yes or no answer, its really a case of summing up your own travel needs and deciding what will work best for you and your circumstances.

Simple point-to-point or return flights: no need for a TA. Anything more complex, I'll definitely get one involved.

Being able to stuff multiple reservations in to a single PNR has made my life easier on a number of occasions..!

The one I use has access to fares that can not be booked online.

I find our work TA a pain in the proverbial, I would much prefer to be able to book my own and then reimburse from the company. It all happens so slow and often what you want can disappear in the time to go through all the communication.

Work TAs are often pretty terrible.. there's only one agent at our work TA that I'll deal with, and he's fantastic - the rest are useless though. It really is down to the person.

We use a TA for our international air travel, cruises and occasionally accommodation. We though are probably quite unusual in our requirements.
Although i could book our DONE4s or Circle fares online there are 2 reasons why we use a TA.First we like to book a year out(Type As) but only pay 4-6 weeks out.Cant do this online but can through a TA.As I have operated on an overdraft this more than pays the TAs charges.
Second if any changes to be made it is just an email-eg on next trip in July 2012(:()I am on an Aaward, mrsdrron paid-one email and the PNRs are linked-tyhough it had been done before my email. Also if a problem-eg we were due to fly to BKK when the yellow shirts shut down the airport we got an email from the TA saying I have tentatively rebooked you through SIN or I can get a refund without any penalty-as mrsdrron had had a fall that morning we elected the refund. Also with the QF grounding we were to fly to BKK on the tuesday.Saturday night and our TA had booked us on the BA flight.
Occasionally we do use her for hotels though generally i book on line on a cancellable rate. However on 1 occasion I was going to a conference in Anaheim.Only rate at Hilton was $US1500 a night. Our TA got us in for $150 a night-by ringing the various consolidators for group tours and finding one who had a room available.
On top of this is the bonus of finding out about specials before they are announced publicly and invitations to special events-eg mrsdrron went to a cooking school with Rick Stein which had been arranged by our agent. They are independent operators.
So we feel the cost of a TA is money well spent.

Same here, you tell them exactly which flights you want and by the time they come around to book it the seats are no longer available.
