I have a Personal Amex Platinum and I hear mixed messages around what is better to book through Amex online booking travel or directly with Hertz or Avis.

This is for Australia.

What is the general consensus?

Book around 10 cars a year and whilst a couple are Kia Carnival the rest are Midsize SUVs.

Thanks

The Amex car rental portal has been next to useless for me. Many rental stores not listed outside major cities, or seemingly have no inventory. Pricing, when available, has not been great.

Better to book direct using the Amex status partners & preferential rates.

Also look at Sixt using the NRMA rate, I find them to be very competitive on price.

I was going to make a post about this shortly but you have a look at the benefits Accor Plus has via your Plat card. Accor Plus grants you a wide range of statuses/benefits that you might find useful.

E.g. Accor Plus gets you 20% of rates via EuropCar so check them out.

I too have the same experience. Too few options at AMEX Travel. In my situation it was 30% more expensive than directly booking with the Car Rental Company!

  1. Hertz Gold Plus Rewards Five Star Status: As an Amex Platinum Card Member, you automatically enjoy perpetual Five Star status in the Hertz Gold Plus Rewards program. This means benefits like upgrades, additional driver inclusion, and more1.
  2. Discounts and Upgrades: Booking directly with Hertz using your Amex Platinum corporate discount code can be a smooth experience. You’ll get up to a 15% discount off standard rates and enjoy one-car-class upgrades when possible2.
  3. Amex Travel Portal: While booking through Amex Travel might earn you 2x points, some travelers find the experience less favorable. Additionally, if the location runs short of vehicles, third-party bookings (like Amex Travel) may be low priority

Had a horrid experience with Sixt in Europe made through Amex Travel. In saying that, Amex CC have been great in resolving issues. So there is that to consider. We have a wide range of car rental options in Australia that are competitive - so it shouldn't matter much from who to use.

We have been using Hertz/Sixt for a while and they have always been easy to deal with. Only once did we have an issue with the car but that is common across any car rental provider. Most of the times , we do get an upgrade in lieu of the hertz status from my charge card which helps us.
