I will second the great Canon IXUS series....very small for sliding into your pocket, takes great photos and HD video - perfect for travel.

A problem I had with a previous model IXUS was really poor battery life, I used to have to carry a spare charged battery with me. The battery in my new one goes on forever.

Up until very recently I used an Olympus Tough camera but I just upgraded to a Sony Nex 3 and I love it. The photos are much better quality and I really like being able to use the manual settings as this camera is really a DSLR lite rather than a compact. I still have the tough camera and intend to keep it for use on active holidays as it is great for skiing, snorkelling and the like so I guess I will now travel with both quite often.

I would say that the Nex 3 would probably be overkill if you just want to use it for Internet work. At 14mp the pictures are going to be way to big to upload as is and so you are either going to need to shoot them on a low setting or modify them before you upload them. Also when it is attached to the lens that you are going to want to use most of the time it's not really pocket sized. I can fit it in to a medium sized handbag with a few other bits and pieces but I wouldn't try and get it in my pocket. So I would say that if you just want a neat camera to shoot photos for the net this is not the right camera. The Tough camera might be a good choice especially if you want something that can deal with more extreme conditions (eg up to 10m underwater).
Mrs.dr.ron has the Nex 5,I have now the HX100V but in my pocket is the old cybershot 12mp-inside plane and food shots always on this.
I use Picassa and downsize for posting on my TRs etc-I find it really easy.

Just got an iPhone and am very impressed with the camera. I have a free photoshop app and it works pretty well. if the main concern is telephoto, you can buy a telephoto lens for an iphone for $150 or so (in oz). Otherwise I have a Sony cybershot Exmor R 10.2Mpixel particularly good for high quality video, good stills too.

I agree - I've actually been using the iPhone as a P&S camera since it first came out, as it actually produces pretty decent results, provided there is plenty of light. Once light starts to drop, it has horrible noise levels and awful exposure compensation resulting in very poor shots - which is not ideal for cabin shots. It's certainly improved with each release, to the point where the iPhone 4 is almost a P&S replacement. If only if performed just a little better in low light, I'd be happy to use it as a regular supplement to a DSLR - but it's just not quite there yet.

The other issue when it comes to TRs is that phones don't count as 'cameras' for the purposes of operating during take-off/landing, meaning that you miss quite a bit during that time if you're solely reliant on it for a TR.

I don't even know why I am on this thread as my knowledge of cameras is that they are used to take photos and naught else.

I can only say that I bought mine based on two very important factors:

1) it was within budget (i.e. it was cheap), and
2) it was pretty ;)

Since I would end up taking a same-looking shot with a 1mp phone or an SLR $10,000 thing, all the specs didn't come into play - just gibberish to me anyway.

I was looking at the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ20, and would have gone for that but it was just a bit over my budget. :-| I didn't realise Panasonic were so strong in the camera market.
They are? i have my camera here on my desk. It is (coz it says on it, otherwise I'd have no idea) a Panasonic Lumix (aren't they two different brands?) TZ10 - guess this is under the 20 so not what you are after - but it works well enough for me.

I've got the TZ-10 with built in gps. The zoom and photo quality is fantastic..
- That's what I have. It has good zoom? Okay. *turns to Tony*. My camera has good zoom....

*?*

Tony, one thing I can say is that if you take photos as half as well as you write trip reports (even without doing a trip... yet) then we are all looking forward to your snaps ;)

Staying sober long enough to take photos is a worry. Having seen the fantastic trip reports of late there is no way I can live up to them.
