Sorry to dig up an old thread, but after the discussion RE: The American situation, I popped onto this to see what people have suggested previously RE: Good CC insurance. One of the myths about credit card insurance is that they are some sort of claytons policy.
All that the banks do is buy a standard policy in bulk from an insurance company with no brokers, travel agents or online aggregators in between. When they buy a say half a million policies and only a minority travel in any one year, the discounts are huge.
On the cards web page look in the small print for a link to the policy disclosure statement. If you can satisfy the requirements to activate the cover and importantly the cover suits your needs go for it.
After hearing many pieces of advice, but no anecdotes suggesting actual poor service, I went and looked very closely at the insurance offered by my CC provider. I have a HSBC Platinum Qantas Visa. I also have healthcare insurance through Bupa, which I have purchased travel insurance from in the past.
I grabbed the PDS for the insurance I purchased through BUPA and the PDS for the HSBC card, and found that both were line-for-line identical, and that both were underwritten by Allianz. The only discrepancy was a single line on the HSBC PDS that required that the flight to be paid for on the HSBC card for the insurance to be valid. I went and checked insurance I bought back in 2015 through a broker, and sure enough... Same policy again. I've never had any issues with this policy and the communication with Allianz.
Not willing to stop there, I contacted HSBC and had a chat to them about the insurance product. Sure enough, HSBC redirected me to Allianz.
While my HSBC card has a comparatively expensive annual fee, I'm pretty happy to pay it as it comes with a policy that I was typically paying more than if I took a couple of overseas trips, as I did this year.
