I'm looking at a trip to Islay next year with a couple of mates. If I search for 'Islay' in the forum, there are pages of hits. But, as best I could tell, none relate to anyone who has been.

Obviously whisky is a big part of why we're going, but looking for tips, recommendations on where to stay/eat, best tastings/tours, other things worth doing, from anyone who has been there.

I think we'll take the puddlejumper from GLA and get a driver whilst there, but haven't completely ruled out hiring a car and taking a ferry.

Anyone got any insights?

I have lived almost half my life in Scotland but I've never actually been to Islay! Still I would highly recommend driving if you have the time. It's a beautiful drive from Glasgow to Kennacraig where you'd catch the ferry to Port Askaig. You'll pass by the Rest and be Thankful - a favourite view of mine in Scotland. Inverary is a lovely place to stop for a castle visit if that's your thing, or at least for a spot of lunch. And I just love taking ferries in Scotland.

It's been a few years since we were there but it's a wondeful experience. Hire a car, take the ferry, stay for a few days, visit distileries.
