Hi everyone,

I was wondering the other day what is the best possible status run. Let's say someone was using a OneWorld Explorer F 6 Segment ticket, I was wondering the biggest SC run possible (say from SYD).

Obviously some segments wouldn't have first class seats but it would be an interesting exercise. Any takers?

Conversively what's the biggest SC you ended up out of a trip?

How about 1000 SCs for A$3731 (plus taxes)? I think that is a better deal than any OneWorld Explorer can achieve.

What is this?
Quite simple really. The hard part is getting to the starting point  and getting a Visa may be tricky.

Now, in Club Europe, you earn 80 SCs from TIP to LHR. Then earn 240 SCs from LHR-SIN in First and 180 SCs from SIN-SYD in F. Then the same for the return and that adds up to 1000 SCs.

The difficult part is that this fare (fare basis AFFAFR) is only availble ex TIP for the return journey.

According to the fare rules:
Fare Rules said:
FLT APPL
APPLIES TO ANY BA FLIGHT BETWEEN AFRICA AND AREA 3-ASIA AND SOUTHWEST PACIFIC.

STOPOVERS
UNLIMITED STOPOVERS PERMITTED. A STOPOVER

TICKET RESTRICTIONS
TICKETS MUST BE ISSUED: IN LIBYA NOTE: SALES RESTRICTION ALSO APPLIES TO ADVERTISING
Given the lack of restrictions, I expect you could possibly do even better than 1000 SCs for this return fare. This one books into A class.

I believe there is a similar fare that books in F (I am sure Dave can shine his gold starts that were presented today and provide the details), but the only one I can find is on EK/UL and not valid for OneWorld.

Whilst I geniunely admire the enthusiasm NM, I doubt I'll get to TIP in the near future, can we limit answers to Aust/Asia or other popular start points as a "class B" category of answer?

I'm 30% of the way through a DONE4 wich I worked out with the help of Kiwi Flyer, I have earnt 560 SC's from 6 sectors already and have bookings for the other 14 that will earn another 1800. This gives a total of 2,360 SC's! If I had wanted to go to Pakistan rather than Japan and a place (I cant remember) in the Middle East rather than Dubai it would have totalled 2400 SC's. I will also earn about 125,000 ff points directly from flying. More when you include the 25,000 I will get in 'loyalty' bonus's  .

This cost about AUD8050 ex CMB (Sri Lanka); that includes all taxes. It cost me 50,000 pts & $130 to get to CMB to collect the tickets and start the journey.

With positioning sectors this is about $3.50 per SC.

It is a fact that a well constructed DONE4 will generally get one the best "bang for your buck". This is mainly due to the 20 segment limit restricting what can be done in with xONE5/6's.

Edited typo (Ta JohnK); that's it.. too late. I'm off!

Well I just happen to know someone who has just purchased such a ticket. This person lives in Australia and will be travelling to TIP to commence the itinerary described above. And they will collect 1000 SCs for the effort.

So it is not just a hypothetical exercise. And I think it gives a good point of comparison for more local starting locations.

As for using OneWorld Explorer fares for SC runs, I think the DONE4 is probably the best option. More continents will permit more inter-continental segments, but you still limited to a max of 20, so not great extra value for the extra money. And with a DONE4 booking into A class on AA domestic flights, you can get very good value out of the 6 USA sectors.

You can probably squeeze the $/SC rate down slightly with an AONE4 fare, but the monetary investment is higher.

BKK or CMB are probably still the best starting points close to Australia for OWE fares.

Sorry serfty not meaning to be ASA but isn't that 560SC's + 1800SC's = 2360SC's not 3360SC's, or is there a typo somewhere?

TIP, definately in the top ten places to visit. :P

I hope Dave is there for business as he is totally against status runs.

If you're referring to the ex-TIP ones, just standard flexible first class round trip.

Actually, I am not there for business and, indeed, I don't go in for status runs, though I do like getting cheap tickets. I am going to Europe on holiday anyway on the return half of thr ticket I purchased earlier this year and TIP is v close to quite a pleasant diving location ( Malta ) . Note: I am buying this ticket since it's a damned fine fare for a 1st class to Oz, not for SCs

For those who might be interested, this is the full IATA fare and the rules are

The fare I quoted is a BA First Class fare, booked in A class, and only available for sale in Libya. The fare Dave Noble quotes is a slightly less restrictive fare, being an IATA fare it is available for use on any IATA carrier, and books into F inventory.

Not sure I'd be going to Libya for any reason.

But say hello to colonel Ghadaffi for me. (Has he paid up for Lockerbie yet?).

:)

Why not? Isn't one of the joys of travel , the opportunity to visit interesting places and I think that this qualifies under this; the Corinthia Hotel looks to be a good hotel and a tour guide for the day isn't expensive

If there is anyone aware of cheap airfares then it would be you.

I would still call it a status/mileage run.

Tripoli, Libya. Desert, Sand, fundamentalists. :?

Have a nice holiday.

Remember though; I would be going to somewhere such as Cyprus to dive the Zenobia or Malta to dive some wrecks there anyway whilst I was on holiday ( as well as hopefully diving the mine in St Louis in USA ). To come back from TIP , to me, is (a) interesting and (b) pretty much =en-route. I was less interested in the status but more the comfort of 1st , though given I would be in the area anyway, the large number of SCs did appeal

I know this thread is primarily about OW and SC's (and please forgive me if this has already been covered elsewhere), but I wondered if some of our *A members might be interested in similar good fares out of BKK/CMB (must admit I haven't looked at fares out of TIP, but there are probably some good *A fares there too).

For what it's worth, I recently purchased a C class ticket (I have it in my hot little hand) from CMB to LAX on *A carriers, for AUD 2,500 incl all taxes, etc. The routing (my choice) is CMB-MLE-DXB-BKK-LAX-JFK-BKK-CMB. All sectors are booked in C, except for LAX-JFK on UA, which is booked in D. However, I have already upgraded that to F class, using a CR1 certificate.

Never been to MLE before, so am looking forward to it (good diving there too, I believe). I could have taken a more direct routing or flown out of BKK for a few hundred dollars less, but it is nice to visit new places, especially when you’re not in a hurry.

This itinerary will give approx 33,000 MP EQM's, so for under AUD 10,000 one can attain 1K status and travel in C class as well. How to get to CMB? I am using 75,000 MP miles for a business class ticket on SQ, but I've noticed that economy tickets are available from time to time for not much more than AUD 1000 (even less to BKK).

And I think it fair to expect that if this fare was only valid on EK, you would still be taking it due to its value for money for the comfort provided. Now lets see, travel in WT+ on BA (similar fare cost for LHR-SYD-LHR) or F on EK. Hmm, tough choice  - and SCs don't come much into play.

If you are referring to the Bonne Terre Mine dive, you may be disappointed from reports I have heard. I recently dived with 2 guys who likened it to a Japanese bus shopping tour with many restrictions. Notwithstanding the above the whole concept sounds pretty cool. I believe there is 2 others in the region but these are overhead/cave dives.
