Best seats economy A380?

32AB have opened up so I've switched there for now...hopefully a good choice and will be great if there's no one next to me! I might keep an eye on the loading though as might be a better chance of two to myself somewhere else away from the bulkhead... I'm more comfortable with armrest up and head down ideally so will have to see how it goes. I'm not good at sleeping on planes but will have to try since it's overnight!

Thanks to everyone who helped with my musings!

I have had vacant seats next to me in bulkhead row but in the block of 4 seats. Not easy with the pair of seats as they are an aisle and window and people try to avoid middle seats.

Hi peeps, so I've currently got a choice to fly Singapore in either the QF A380 or the SQ A380.

Singapore Airlines
Inclusive of 4 seats selection for the return trip, the total costs for 2 people on SQ comes up to around $1303.
The timing is next to perfect as it allows us to arrive into SG on 6am (which technically gives us an extra day) and the return flight reaches Melbourne at 8pm at night.

Qantas
The flight to SG is on the A380 but coming back will be on the A330.
Will probably not bother with advanced seat selection for the A330 but we can get seats 36J & 36K on the upper deck on the A380 for an extra $70. The total costs for 2 people inclusive of 2 seats selection for the return trip comes up to around $1,222 after the additional $50 Amex cashback.
The timing pales in comparison to SQ as we arrive into SG in the evening (technically losing a day) and the flight back will be an overnighter in the A330, reaching Melbourne at 9am.
I do have 2 Qantas Club lounge passes to use if we choose to fly on QF metal.

Given the above circumstances, which flight would you choose?
Thanks!

Looks like it's open......just in time for me next week :)

Qantas opens all-new Melbourne domestic business class lounge

I will be travelling though in a party of 6, 2 in business, 4 in eco, 2 of them hold a QC membership, can I guest the other 2 onto QC and then head off to the business lounge for a shower after the red eye?

I've only travelled on the QF A380, and 36J & K are favourites of ours. For the timing of the flights it's up to you. QF2 leaves LHR at 9.30pm, so you get the day in the UK. SQ leaves in the morning, so you spend the day in the air. Swings and roundabouts really.

With the QC passes, best to use them at Heathrow, have a shower, a drink at the gin bar etc. There are lots of options in Singapore to check out other than the Qantas Lounge there.

Thanks for the reply but the final destination for us is Changi, not proceeding to LHR :)
But same concept re timing as QF leaves Changi late at night while SQ in the morning.

Is there only 1 lounge that we can use in Changi with the complimentary Qantas Club passes?

Any ideas if the lounge is normally crowded at night before the 11:55pm flight?

I think I saw somewhere about the lounge being a zoo or smtg
I was there last night, it was absolutely packed at 7pm with the banks of AU flights readying for departure. At 11pm it was almost a ghost town. Same 2 months ago.

I thought it was a bit cute that the person at the counter gently offered the BA or EK alternatives (as a WP) if I wanted as it was "very busy inside tonight".

Confirmed, sitting in the SIN lounge currently waiting for QF 38 at 11.50, lots of space no issues with showers etc. much better than a few weeks ago when I was here at 6.30 for the earlier flight

My in-laws are travelling on QF 8 (Dallas to Sydney) and are keen on booking one of the sought after economy seats on the upperdeck however the Qantas staff have advised that they are not yet released. Does anyone know how long before departure they are released?

Seating can become 'more' available 3 days and 8 hours before the flight.

I spent ~14 hours in 36J a couple of nights ago. Maybe it was just my imagination, but I think the seats in row 36 recline more than the other seats? I had a comfortable flight and slept around 5 hours, which I can't usually do in Y. Being at the back of the cabin, there's nobody behind you either. I would definitely choose row 36 again.

Also, can confirm that the QF lounge really cleared out after ~8pm. Very pleasant while waiting for QF1.

I had my first QF A380 flight in upper deck economy in 32J on the weekend and I'm going to say that was a little disappointing.

I was expecting a fixed armrest in the bulkhead but it was like a normal arm rest but felt lower than most armrests. That also means that a bigger person may spill over into the other seat.

The seat belt is also different to other seat belts and not easy to use for a bigger person like me.

Also I didn't look too closely as it was a night flight but couldn't find the call button. Does this still exist?

I miss the old 80A/K. May try lower deck bulkhead next time.

The call button certainly exists. Either use you monitor or it's in the fixed control.

No. Qantas have enhanced these. This is actually a genuine enhancement as it removes the previous disappointment of pressing it only for it be ignored. :D

In my experience the call button was answered the majority of the time. The crew on this flight didn't move much through the upper deck cabin.

P.S. They also ran out of Coke No Sugar which I found a little strange.

travelling with the wife, infant and a 2yo on QF7.

would you go row 51 altogether, or try for 80A/K and infant + 1 in row 81?

From what i understand the armrest between 80A/B or 80J/K doesn't come up so for the 2yo's sleep he's a bit out of luck either way? (in terms of being able to lay across 2 seats)
