Best use of qantas FFpoints

The best use of Qantas points is 140k/280k Y and J One World awards... You get to travel 35,000 miles, 5 stopovers and a limit of 16 legs (including ground legs)

With 1 million points you could nearly book 4, certainly 3 of these trips that can be used for RTW itineraries

Just need to get 6+ weeks of annual leave approved to take advantage of an OTW ticket!

I am a NB and booked 2 J seats to NYC last September.
I logged on everyday for a month prior to my departure date to get a feel for the reward releases.

I ended up picking up 2 QF J seats a few days early than my first choice date but I took them and was so glad I did as the next week I couldn't see anything on offer.
The return flights were much harder to secure and I ended up flying via Hong Kong on CX.
We loved the QF J experience but the CX was even better.

So I would not hesitate picking up CX flights.

Good luck, it was a stressful experience getting the flights but worthwhile in the end.

I've fond many times the OW award seats out of Asia in J/F particularly HKG fantastic and virtually zilch fees and charges to USA / Europe, huge choice of airlines too, so get yourself to position there and the world is your oyster (and HK is fabulous stopover).

You don't need to have any status, just find the flights and book them yourself using the multi city took or call up Qantas.. they can come with a bit of a large surcharge slug, especially if you use BA or IB, but this lets you use flights on any of the One World airlines....
Also including CX flights in booking by going via HKG reduces the fuel surcharges.

I am leaving ~1.1 million in the bank for 4 x 2 x 140,000 Oneworld awards.

You don't need 6 weeks, that may maximise the use of them, but if just a direct flight there and back toa destination costs nearly 280k points, then there is no harm using them on the OW award, especially if you are travelling to a few places int he USA or Europe, or would like a quick stop in another continent on the way back....

No luck for me today T-353 days on Qantas Business CLass Awards.

SYD - LAX, or SYD to Dallas Fort Worth for May 10 2017.

Only routes are via Hong Kong or Doha on 35-40 hour flights paths for the typical 12-15hrs direct with Qantas.
Looks like economy once again :(

Might not suit everyone... we've redeemed dozens of award seats days/week out from departure. CX is almost a certainty.

Booking short has seen this family of 4 enjoy many holidays.

Interesting to know. Might be a bit too risky for me, but I now have 353 days to ponder and look around for any additional award seats that come out or sales on for economy seats. Will just keep building a points balance that'll never be used.

There is anecdotal evidence they have been releasing them around T-330 so keep the expert flyer alerts in place.

Sad to hear that you were not successful in getting seats.
I am surprised with the CX offer. When I was looking last year there was plenty of CX with a stop over of 2.5 hours.

Keep looking.

You just have to accept that you may not always be able to fly direct and rather have to connect. I am booked with CX in a few weeks back from LAX to SYD in J. Yes it's a long flight home but better than spending 14 hours in Y.

Yeh... I'm trying to convince the wife that 35 hours in business class is worth it for a typical 14hr flight.

Following my own NB advice to now wait until T-310 rather than the old 353 for premium cabins has seen me today snare 4xJ Syd-SFO on QF73 for March 27 2017 a couple of weeks before school hols.
Very happy (fuel charges aside of course)

And, strangely EF is not showing these T-310 releases to me...although QF is

Nice. I wish I could get 4xJ to LHR on QF metal.
