I've flown into and out Sydney and Melbourne many times but have isle seats and not flying for the views... this time I have a friend from Finland and want to know (statistically) which side of the plane to sit for best views both landing and take off for both Sydney and Melbourne. We are flying CBR-SYD-MEL-DPO.
I think landing in Sydney would be leftside. Taking off? Left again? Landing Melbourne? Leaving Melbourne?

What times are your flights and what month?

Always left side arriving in Sydney for the chance you are landing south, you'll get amazing views of the harbour.

For SYD-MEL: Taking off from Sydney, the left side probably gives you a slightly higher chance of a city view but if you sit on the right, you might get to see CBR from the air en-route if it's not cloudy.

I'm with Team Left! particularly in and out of Sydney
Day or night, the city view from the left side when landing to the south is the money shot. I think I heard a few oohs and ahhs landing last night coming in from SIN.

During the day, taking off to the south usually has good views of Bondi Beach and Eastern Suburbs from the left side (I’ve been known to mutter “I can see my house from here”…😀).

One of the best, but probably unlikely is take off to the north and turn right down the harbour out over the coast. A lot of the trans-Pac flights do that. But you need to be on the right for the best city, harbour and coast view.

...and, shortly after that, some of the ski fields often on the left - fun fact for Europeans: the Australian Alps get more snow each year than the Swiss Alps!
