Hi Folks,

Looking at a number of upcoming trips from SYD > Seoul over the coming months. Korean Air do a nice, direct SYD > Seoul flight, but as a loyal QF FF, I'm seeking to find the best way to get there and still earn QF SC's. Right now, it's looking like routing via Tokyo is the way to go. Any other suggestions from anyone who's done this trip a few times?

Haven't done the trip, but I guess via HKG is a also a possibility (QF SYD-HKG, CX HKG-ICN).

I guess connections and whether the fare earns with QFF are the two main considerations (not forgetting price as well). I'm pretty sure some CX fares either don't earn with QF and/or earn at a reduced rate. Not sure about JL.

I've flown HKG - ICN before on CX412.
Fare bucket M (-Y) so only 50% QF FF points earn (636 points), 20 SC's (1,272 miles).

Last month I flew QF368 (ICN-SYD), fare bucket V (-Y), full QF FF points, 35 SC's (5,164 miles).

It felt a bit odd because the flight was on Asiana metal (OZ = *Alliance) and because I was WP I had access to the Asiana Business Lounge as well, so I felt a bit guilty that it wasn't crediting to my OZ FF account!

@fantic125, did this QF368 have the flat beds up front?

edit, not really :(

As mentioned above, you can take the Asiana codeshare SYD-ICN. If you wanted to maximise SCs, then I would suggest SYD-BNE(or MEL)-HKG, ticketed on QF, and then on a separate CX booking, HKG-ICN. Just be sure that the CX booking says it will earn Asia Miles, because you'll then earn QF points and SCs too. (Obviously, book the tickets as returns - SYD-BNE-HKG-BNE-SYD on QF, and HKG-ICN-HKG on CX - just be careful with dates) :)

Is there any way of getting the price approaching something reasonable. I have been looking at SYD-ICN in Oct and the OZ codeshare prices in J are IMHO a joke.
I can do this trip either crediting to QF via OW or crediting to DJ using SQ, or even  Miles and Smiles * G

Have you considered a circle Asia & South West Pacific - although requires two stopovers - mind you a night at the Conrad in HKG is always nice ;)

Thanks simongr I had a look at that. Bit pushed time wise to take full advantage of that fare. I think the front runner right now is CX via HKG, its pricing around $6000 incl taxes and might allow me to have a night at the Conrad on the way there, might even try for it on HH points as I won't be able to claim it as a work expense.
Just had a look through the forums at the CX J class and it doesnt look too shabby if I can give up the status bonus.

The food for me on CX is patchy - the cheese is generally good and the port good. I can't drink the deutz "champagne" but that is my pallette I understand ;)

If you get the new J seats and have an iPad then grab a Composite AV cable and play your movies on the IFE.

Heading over to ICN is a hard route for QF - I did it last month. PE sale SYD - HKG and then Asiana to ICN but the connections are terrible and I was short on time, so basically lost a nights sleep. If you can stay over in HKG then it makes it much better and you can take advantage of the route benefits. Upgraded to Business on the return leg and the lounge at HKG is great, brilliant service.

I never flown myself but did you look at BKK option if you want J?

QF SYD - BKK J can be found around $4k 240SCs return.

Then CX BKK - ICN via HKG in J is $1.5k 280SCs return

Novotel Airport in BKK is quite good and cheap.

Or maybe QF + CX to Taipei VIA HKG in Y for less than $1.2k then CX TPE - ICN via HKG in J for around $900.
