Best way to fly J to NYC with VA points??

Early this year I found it possible to get Washington Dulles-LAX-BNE-HBA FOR 2 in J on a VA reward. I think it was 125000 pts per person. Had the choice of Dulles, New York Newark or Boston with comfortable connections in LAX. The Virgin America experience was reasonable although the CSM in J was a bit too casual.
I found near impossible to get J in the opposite direction ex OZ.
Previously have flown SIA in J MEL-SIN-FRA-JFK and really enjoyed it. Not sure if your points are going to stretch far enough and availability on SIA

Thanks for the feedback. I've booked MEL - LAX in J for my partner and I over May/June 2017. Will look at booking either Delta, Virgin America or United Airlines to get to NYC in J.
Great stuff - first on DL can be surprisingly cheap.

For myself I have just completed booking two one-way VA J rewards for an early-mid June return journey.

Needed some hunting as well and I could not book for my preferred dates ... but ...

However, often VA awards appear on flights 5-7 days out and it's from a relatively inexpensive $60 per PAX to move to other days as they may become available.
