Beware the business bogan

Canny Man, must agree. My personal rule is I never recline on short haul. Long haul in a J pod it is not an issue. But when as you say a dodgy seat autoreclines I hate it. Do to others as......and I never want even an unknown person to think anything less.

My suspicion is that this is where all the barely hidden agro about this subject comes from. Everyone has a different view on what seems completely reasonable to them.

I don't mind one jot if someone reclines fully in front of me. My suspicion is that many who are ok with reclines are probably similar ... they either don't object or are indifferent.

I have views on other pax who don't fit into their seat and spill into mine, and screaming children however ... my point being, we all have our "thing", but we just have to move past that else we'll all die young of blood pressure related problems.

I was on a 738 from BNE-SYD just now and have arrived in SYD.

I could not get my favoured row 4 aisle or at least row 4 window so I kept my 5C allocation. I asked at the airport and 4B was available ~1 hour from flight time. I refused.

Anyway the guy in 4C momentarily reclined and then put seat back up again but the tiny lady in 4B reclined throughout the flight. She was well dressed but lost all respect from me the minute she rocked her seat back without care in the world. The guy next to me was reading a newspaper and had to lean on seat 5A to read as that guy was gone for ~10 minutes and then I assume leant on my seat for ~10 minutes when I went walkies down the back and then could not come back waiting for the cart.

So the lady in 4B, who got that seats quite late, felt it was her God given right to recline on that length of flight? Totally makes sense to me.

And I know the very few recliners on AFF are not interested but just in case you are interested there are 156 economy seats on a QF 738 and I slowly walked back from the rear of aircraft and there were 12 people fully or partially reclined. Yes only 12! I know one flight does not make a trend but on my flights recliners are an overwhelming minority especially on short haul flights.

Fact. Most people I know only recline because the person in front has reclined.

Stop being selfish and have some consideration for the people around you and stop preaching that reclining is your God given right in life....

JohnK, go with the stop preaching bit and stop assuming that the space my seat reclines into is yours.

FYI as I mentioned earlier I don't recline on the short flights (PER-PBO/ZNE 20 times Nov 2011 until now) however others travelling on the 0525 departures see it as an extra hour of sleep and do recline. However going PER-BNE/SYD/MEL I'll go back as soon as meals are done.

The definition of space needs to be looked at. Is it from back of seat to back of seat in upright or reclined position? I'd say the latter but that's just me.

IME the seat reclines into the volume that would be occupied by my laptop screen when deployed on the tray table, so much so that I have to adjust the screen position. I consider that to be my space.

As for sleeping reclined, some people just need to learn to sleep sitting upright.

I don't know if you are joking or serious. In case you are being serious ... Its not God given, its airline given ... and one pays money for it along with the other conditions of the flight.

In any event, as mentioned previously - complain to the airlines about it, no point whinging to the Pax involved as they are simply using what they paid for (if they choose). If you can convince any airline that non reclining seats will make them more money then you'll be on a winner (and so will they).

Agree what you say re the laptop but what are you going to do if someone does recline? Participate in the childish antics that other in here have suggested? Sorry but if the seat can be reclined then as much as I may hate it (ie trying to work on a laptop is a great example) they're entitled to do it and I have to live with it.

As for the sleeping upright bit, there's nothing worse than trying to sleep bolt upright.

I truly wish I could sleep in an upright position, but I can't. I try very hard *not* to recline on short hops, but when I have to catch the first flight out at the crack of dawn to make an international connection (or even attend a meeting for that matter), I'm sorry to say, I recline to try and catch some shut-eye before having to look bright eyed & bushy tailed almost as soon as I land.

I do check to make sure the person behind doesn't have their laptop open and do recline gently *after* meal service; whY is uncomfortable at the best of times and that tiny bit of recline (yes, I know full well it's only a slight bit of extra comfort), can be a Godsend when you're exhausted or just need to get some rest.

I've been asked to put my seat up a little more in the past, and was happy to do so (it was a polite request), however, when my seat is treated like a punch bag, or you decide to jam your knees into my back, without even bothering to ask me if I can sit upright a little further, it's like a red flag to a bull.

Seriously, we are all in the same boat and the lack of civility and common courtesy that seems to prevail on aircraft, more often than not, is unbelievable. . . . . .

John,

Were you on QF539 by chance? or QF541?
I had 4A on QF539, but it's been a long week, so I decided to lash out with the 5000pts and took an on departure upgrade when I got to the QP and ended up in 3A :)

I'm old school on reclining. I actually hate it when I get a dodgy seat that reclines itself without a button push. I believe in do unto others as you would have done unto you. In other words I don't like having the seat in front of me recline so I won't do it to someone else.

oh yes, someone who thinks exactly the same way as myself :D

It is my space. Are you winding me up or trying to make me angry? I could not care less about the recline feature especially for someone sitting in row 4 on a 738.

Now if you really want to listen I was in 5C and when I was seated in my seat there was about 10 inches of free space to the seat in front and when the person in front reclines that leaves 6-7 inches of free space. How kind of you and this has nothing to do with the airlines.

I was on QF539 and I must have seen you get out of your seat and grab your bag from the overhead bin right in front of me when we were disembarking in SYD.

Now how was someone in 5C the first of the economy class passengers to get off? You see I was so angry with the flight that I got up out of my seat as soon as we got to the gate and left the riff raff behind me as I glided to the lounge for some much needed refreshments to wipe the memories of that flight....

The solution:

1. Hate being reclined into? Sit in the first row.
2. Want to recline and not get into anyone else's space? Sit in the last row of J.

Problem solved.

I like your solution, but what about those of us who have no choice other than fly whY? ;)

Simplistic, but works equally well for both the haters/lovers of reclining. :D

Whilst on the "Could not care" train of thought. Could not care if me reclining produces steam from your ears.

If my seat moves into it it isn't "your space" then, if you want to pull a laptop out and work move to J that is why they call it "Business" Class.

I don't really care if there was 5 inches of space left. I'd assume I have the same amount should the person in front of me recline and I was upright. Their entitlement, good luck to them.

Read MarkD's post, very apt.

This is starting to venture toward being personal so let's not go there please.

Let us stay with discussing the topic and if necessary agreeing to disagree.

Or for those who have to choice other that to travel in whY choose the exit rows. On a 738 row 13 is the first exit row & although you won't be able to recline, neither will row 12 in front of you.

If you want two bites of the cherry, select row 14 as row 13 cannot recline in front of you but you can still recline your seat.

On a 734 row 11 is the first exit so you won't be able to recline but neither will row 10 in front. Row 12 will recline plus the added bonus of row 11 not reclining into you.

Yes, I do remember you I think, John. I do recall that you seemed in a rush to get off the plane :)
Were you on the airtrain earlier as well? I think I may have sat near you then too.

Small world!

Years ago, I recall that there was a locking latch on the exit row seats that the FAs would release (or have to be reminded to release) after the seat belt sign went off. Is that no longer the case or am I thinking way back to the Ansett A320s? Maybe I need to venture back of row 5 to see what's going on these days .
