Qantas have sent an email to bid for upgrade to business on an upcoming flight. The only times ive bid before ive been flying solo, however on this occasion I'm travelling with a friend on the one PNR booked from my account to ensure get access to forward Platinum seats.

Now i don't think my points can be used to upgrade my friend, so assuming they have points will system be smart enough to take points from 2 accounts assuming we were sucessful?

“Bid” upgrades are for $$$ not points. If you click through it should tell you if you’re bidding for one or both PAX?

Also, do note that bids are processed after points upgrades.

The email days cash or points.

So what happens if apply for points upgrade?

I had read that Qantas were giving complimentary upgrades to some frequent flyers but have never been that lucky.

Complimentary upgrades would most likely happen in cases where economy is overbooked, most/everyone turns up and not enough passengers request upgrades. There are other reasons.

Op-ups would typically tend to go to solo travellers and they may go by status e.g. P1/CL then WP then SG etc.

If they go by status you would probably need to be the highest status solo traveller with the highest PCV in your cabin on the flight. The lower your status the less likely this is to be the case.

Even then the chances are low as usually there would be more than enough upgrade requests on full flights.

It's cash OR cash + points.

As I understand it, they're only beaten by points upgrades in the initial batch (24-48 hours prior). And they usually don't award all spare J seats in that initial batch.

Looking at the starting bids I opted not to bother. Had we booked Business during a sale the difference between the economy price we paid and the business sale price was a little more than the starting bid; so those that win the bid will likely overpay.

Will just have to slum it in economy, thank goodness day flights both ways.
