Is it possible to get ADSL and not pay line rental, as the cheapest I can find is $20 a month to rent a line that's not being used for anything but data, which I'll be paying for anyway.

Yep, it's called Naked DSL and several providers offer it. In some cases the ISP will be able to order the new line for you, but you may well need to get Telstra to install the line first and connect it up (this has its' own complications - definitely ask your ISP for advice), then get the ISP to convert it to a "Naked" line.

If using iiNet for example, you don't need to get a line in first; as they have their own carrier license (Chime Communications) so can do the "required checks".

In WA people complain that with Amnet they have to get the line in first, and then change to Naked DSL and this is the reason why; Amnet doesn't have carrier license

There are now many secondary providers with ADSL2+ with a better and cheaper service than Telstra. It works for me in country Victoria and all it takes is a few days for them to get Telstra to open the line up.
Yes, I know, these include my current ISP, who provide me with telstra wholesale ADSL. I have ask twice to be migrated to the secondary ISP's hardware, which is available in the exchange. However, these requests have been blocked because it appears my ADSL service is provided by telstra hardware in a RIM. So I'm stuck. :(

As the Toyota add says:

BUGGER:!:

Reminds me of the ad campaign a couple of months back when Woolworths joined the QFF program. The voiceover said something like 'so now you're trip to the Gold Coast just got a whole lot closer'. You'd think that in promoting Qantas they could at least refer to a route Qantas flies!

Can't you use QFF points to book Jetstar flights?

Sounds reasonable to me - it doesn't say 'Qantas to the Gold Coast' does it?

Ah, the joys of the RIM! In my last house, I had such luxury. Luckily I was able to get my line transposed to copper and then enjoy the fruits of ADSL2+

They're promoting the Qantas Frequent Flyer program, surely the least they could do is use a route Qantas actually flies! ("So now you're flight to Singapore/Hong Kong/Kalgoorlie/Brisbane . . . is just around the corner".) Of course, you can use your QFF points to fly from Perth to Johannesburg too - but not flying with Qantas.

Incidentally, Jetstar don't fly to the Gold Coast from Perth.

If you're going to get picky, Qantas don't fly to Kalgoorlie either.. Qantaslink does.

Fair point. I still stand by my original comment, though, concerning the use of the Gold Coast in the ad.

Although perhaps I spoke too soon: QF1060 PER-KGI is operated by Qantas and flies Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday so apparently Qantas do fly to Kal.
