At PERfect City Beach this afternoon in the fresh SW breeze following a good cold front that crossed the coast overnight and brought the first agriculturally useful rains after a severely dry autumn.

This hawk was hovering effortlessly using the wind for a long time while it peered intently into the sand dune vegetation below, all the time seemingly ignoring another bloke and me. Only phone pics, so couldn't get a decent close-up.

I struggled to get a better photo of it from where I was - a Collared Goshawk chowing down on an Indian Mynah bird next to our backyard. We live by a creek in Melbs. I wish he'd come back and kill the rest of the b*ggers. I did get some video as well, but it was a lot easier to see through a set of binoculars.

Yes. A puffin. These photos were all taken last week in Vancouver then Alaska.

Thanks for the information Pushka. I've always been fascinated with Puffins, ever since I read about them in an Enid Blyton adventure book. I thought they were only found on some of the islands of Great Britain. I didn't know they lived in North America. I also love Penguins. I've seen lots of penguins in real life but I've never seen an actual puffin.

I've seen lots of penguins in real life but I've never seen an actual puffin.

You need to plan for a big trip to the Farne Islands - it's not as far north in England as some of the other places and easy to get to - I had a wonderful day

I went around Heimaey Island off Iceland to see the Pufflings learning to fly. Sadly, the sea was way too rough to get close.

Maybe they wonder how with a body like that they can actually fly?
MrP has a couple of cute photos of them flying. Reminds me of a 747. Should never get off the ground - or water!

On the HENLEY Beach jetty the other night. On our walk back he had just caught a fish. How they get that down their throat is amazing. Especially as the fish was still wriggling.
