I need some help from the remaining QFFs :p and the AFF brainstrust, please.

I have a business trip (work policy: Y, BFOD) to Moscow sometime within the next month, as early as next week or I might be able to push it out til mid-Oct after Little Miss's birthday. Most of my colleagues have been travelling via SIN on SIA or Dubai on Emirates to get to Moscow. But that gives me absolutely no use of my lovely WP/OWE status with QF and OW airlines. Looking at departing next week, QF is coming in at over $4k via FRA or LHR, and Emirates at just over $2k. I guess it's school hols, and QF is heavily booked, or just a lovely time of year to visit Europe. :) Mid-Oct is coming in at just over $3k for Y.
I had thought flying with CX might be possible, but requires an overnight to get on the HKG-Moscow flight apparently.

Any suggestions? I think I'm pretty much stuck with either QF/BA via LHR or FRA (and LH FRA-Moscow) which will violate BFOD or going with a non-OWE airline and enjoying a terminal experience. :p

BNE-(QF)-SIN-(AY)-HEL-(AY)-SVO

or

BNE-(CX/QF)-HKG-(AY)-HEL-(AY)-SVO

Would the the two that immediately spring to mind.

(AY = Finnair)

Try the finnair website for pricings.

Another:

BNE-(QF)-LAX-(BA)-LHR-(BA)-SVO

You may need to ticket the LAX-SVO bit seperate to get the price down (and have some time in LA) - but hey, there's an (average) lounge there if you dont want to see LA!

S7 will be the cheapest. The sector on S7, is fairly short. S7 is better than Siberian used to be.

A quick search on S7 is showing around $2000 return from SYD.. so just need to add a BNE-SYD leg in there SYD-FRA is on QF metal

The Finnair site was showing $1835 return to HEL from BNE.Would be QF to SIN and AY from there to HEL.Didnt want to quote to SVO.But that is a short flight and shouldn't add much.

Try Cathay Pacific. You can fly BNE-HKG-DME direct therefore bypassing the joy of London, Frankfurt or Helsinki. Probably the most direct and convenient routing for around $2100.

Also with CX there's no need for a night stop in HKG. Arrive in HKG at 21:35 and depart 00:55 on the way out, and arrive in HKG at 06:00 and depart 08:50 on the return leg. Pretty good connections there.

Thank you all. Will see what happens monday, but I might be heading over next Fri/weekend. Fri CX would work well - my QFF year starts on Sat, so minimal SCs being used this year.

Thanks again for the ideas for pointing the work TA in the right direction. I'll also look at the AY options during the weekend.

I actually flew to Moscow with OW carriers a few weeks ago and did loads of research. I ended up MEL-HKG-DME, but this was simply because I had to land and go straight to an appointment and the AY flights to SVO wouldn't get me in until the middle of the day.

If you timing isn't as tight as mine, I'd definitely fly with AY via SIN (or HKG). Transiting through HEL is simple, the lounge is comfortable and SVO is also an easier airport to get in and out of (according to some of my colleagues), and is closer to the city. You really should check which airport is closer, but get ready for horrible traffic! It took me 2hours to get 16miles after landing in early morning into DME!

Have a great trip, I loved Moscow!

Just a reminder to check if cheap fares will give you your SC points.

Otherwise have a great trip.

Well, it doesn't fly every day, but you could try:
BNE-SYD-NRT on Qantas. Arrives NRT at 6.10am
NRT-DOM on JAL. Departs NRT at 10.55am
So, connects well. I'm seeing Y tickets for around $2300 return.

After input from my Russian colleagues who want me there asap, pending approval, I'm contemplating leaving Fri 30/9 or Sat 1/10, rather than wait til after Little Miss's bday. Would be leaving for home on Sat 8/10 most likely.

Cheaper flights could mean no SCs, but I have little say in the policy of BFOD, though I think I can pay the difference if I wish to break policy. I'm probably more concerned about lounge access, given the possibility of non-OW so no SCs or lounge or OW with lounge, with or without SCs.

Flights booked. Flying BNE-(CNS)-HKG-DME on Friday, and back next weekend on CX. Luckily, I get in early Sat am Moscow time, so I'll have the weekend for sightseeing and recovering from jet lag. :)

Is it worth calling CX as a OWE and requesting seats with extra leg room? They seem to be available for 3 of the 4 legs (HKG-DME not available).

I would say give it a try, no harm in asking :)

Enjoy the trip, my friends loved Moscow. Very expensive though.

I'd believe it. My hotel is over $AUD300/night for a *single* room. And by the photos, that means a *single* bed!!!

Yes they warned me, they paid a ridiculous amount of money for a sub-standard room...
