Bombshell (for me) - New travel policy

Well I was completely wrong. Not only did I get an earlier flight, but I got an aisle seat in the front row of economy. So well done Qantas, but I'm still a Virgin fanboi.

I am a moron though. I've never flown Qantas out of Sydney (I've flown Jetstar) and went to my normal terminal looking for the Qantas check in. All I could find was Qantas Link, where the very helpful staff member checked me in on an earlier flight, moved my seat, and pointed out that the Qantas terminal was on the other side of the carpark.

Come to think of it, if you don't have baggage to check in, this might be worth trying in peak times. ;)

T3 never gets too crowded in the afternoon.. The kiosks are pretty quick and most times they'll offer an earlier flight. I've never queued to get a BP (outside of getting one at the J lounge).

You are no doubt correct. I was just so impressed by the Qantas Link lady who was so willing to help.

No its quite complex as there are across the board deals that have been negotiated, is my understanding. I'm sure if i handed in an expense claim with the price of air tickets on there, it would be knocked back as its not considered "elligible expenditure".

I would take print outs & get quotes that undercut your 'special' company fare as it may come in handy down the track.

It sounds like the only winners out of this new policy will be the beancounters' slush fund if they can produce a spreadsheet that will lead the company to believe they're saving money when I'm sure the opposite will be the case.

Get your resume up-to-date then you can tell them to jam it when you get a better job offer.

In the meantime I trust they will allow you to enter your WP nbr in the pnr so you can get preferred seats, be in the running for op-ups & get any special requests in your profile eg meals.

You may get some naz_ in your travel dept who will refuse to do this however either the fare basis or a code in the pnr will inhibit points/SC accrual so having your WP nbr in the pnr won't affect anything.

At least you can diy via the QF MMB portal.

We had a no limo policy - I elected to pay the difference myself - the difference between a "limo" and a taxi was $0...

I used to do that & hitch a ride on a Harley to Tullamarine for the cost of a cab.

Just to wipe the small amount of dus ton this thread. Have to go to HKG later this month, and I am going to request flights at times that only Cathay services, will be interesting to see what the response will be.

We await the news - let us know what the result is.

There is always ways to play with policies.

OK Travel request has been lodged. I've opted for CX flights both ways.

The last outbound QF flight is at 15:40, while the last CX flight is at 22:20. My justificiation is a) No hotel required with the CX flight, and b) I have a family appointment that afternoon so the later flight is the only option

The inbound QF flights are either 19:55 or 23:30, while the CX flight is at 21:25. My justification here is, my meeting in HK runs til 6pm, I can't get the earlier flight, and the last QF flight will get me in too late the following day for another meeting.

Lets see how that goes down.

My line managers had no issue with the travel request and have approved it without any drama, now its in the lap of the travel dept.

Good luck but if it is approved by the line managers it should be no issue from there.

Pleased to report..

Cathay both ways :)

slowly by slowly we shall show them that any foolish policy is easily tricked :)

CX138 Seat 12A - good choice?
CX161 Seat 17K - again good choice?

Both apparently window seats, with aisle access. CX online seat selection indicates 1-2-1 config, which I assume means new business?

Old CX fishbone business was 1-2-1 also, but that wouldn't bother me one bit.

shouldn't be too difficult, cathay has the frequency strength on the route locked down!

We did a work trip to the US where we used points for 4 J long hauls on SQ and 2 QF First long hauls and then in America we went super cheap in economy using Australian Expedia. All three of us are happy with using the ATO as our travel providore all at wholesale costs.
Caught up with Serfty and jdlover23 in Los Angeles and it is always interesting talking about travel ideas.
I must say the A345 flight from Singapore to Los Angeles or vice versa is very special and it is slated to disappear in less than 12 months.
