Book a flight and Extend Current status to 2022

I could have posted this in one of four threads but here will do, I was on a call the other day to the same team about a booking that QF cancelled and was offered the travel pass thing that involves the options of DSC, DP or 10% increase in dollar value. I asked about the more recent status extension for those with anniversaries up until Jun 22 (I am interested as I am in the Jul cohort) the advice I was given was not to worry. Not sure what that means but maybe there will be another announcement to pick up others that expire in the second half of 2022. Sort of makes sense if travel (including) resumes around Dec 21 as most will should be able to retain their status until 2023 and have a crack at retention the old fashion way, i.e. flying.

I suspect it's clear they will have to extend the Jul-Dec folks too. While "my" agent did not say this (but I did not enquire about it, we just confirmed I had my qualifying flight as my membership rolls over tomorrow night) the reality is they will have to so I am not very worried at all.

I believe the recent Jan-Jun extension (ie what this thread is about) was more hopeful than anything - clearly as of mid year those folks had already lost half their earning potential. So OK, I can probably see the thinking for this promotion, which probably had its genesis earlier in June before SYD went into case meltdown and then lockdown eventually.

Now the reality is as QF well know, that NSW and VIC almost certainly will not be out of serious lockdown until, at the very least, October, and probably a bit later (grumble). While the other states and NT (ACT is cactus too) are OK for now, we all know it just takes a couple of truck drivers or some bozo hiding in a car on a flat bed truck to get in and cause an outbreak. Either way with the two biggest hubs SYD/MEL more or less down to minimums, and less, of flights for the next month or two at the VERY least, and other states keeping border restrictions on these states for just as long, and then some, that travel for all for the majority of the rest of this year is almost certainly effectively zero for most of us.

ergo same situation but six months on and thus QF will almost certainly have to do the same extension offer for Jul-Dec memberships. I can't see any way this won't happen to be honest. I would be gobsmacked to be honest.

(of course I have a great track record of being wrong at times so I add that caveat :D )

Frankly I'd rather be flying! Had so many trips cancelled and had to rejig I've almost given up at this point.. reality though is it's a bit of a FWP for me just frustrated in my lockdown curfew world :D

anyway I am very confident there is no need for us to worry about this (but it won't stop the posts and threads of course :) )

Just ticked over today for my August-ending membership year, and WP status has renewed off the back of this original 'book a flight to extend' promo (flew in Feb 2021 on fresh bookings). What I don't see are any of the [small number of] SCs earned in the year rolled over, as well. Had others seen that taking a little longer to happen? I had a couple of SC earning flights, and some SCs earned on the ground.

Cheers,
Matt.

My membership expired midnight too. On time, my SCs have been wiped and my status requirements "to retain WP" run to August 31, 2022 ... but isn't all this standard? I'm not worried about retaining status - when we could, I flew from November so have the necessary flight - but given SOP is to grant "grace extension" for a couple of days at the start of the new membership year, I can see nothing that say my status has been retained due to the concessions or that its "firm". Am I missing something?

BD

Hi all, I'd like to tack my attempt at a status extension on to this thread.
On 31st August I booked a 17th October Qantas flight Melbourne to Adelaide return to get the status extension. Yesterday I received a Qantas flight change saying my Qantas 17th October flight Melbourne to Adelaide has been changed to 31st October.
I understand that for Qantas initiated cancellations your status will be extended, but Qantas hasn't cancelled the booking, they have rebooked me to a much later unsuitable date. What do I do with regard to the booking if I want to NOT accept their change & keep the status extension? Do I just do nothing & Qantas will get back to me before the original flight date?

You don't need to do anything. The requirement is to book the flight - which you have:

Who is eligible for the Status Extension?
Qantas will extend the status for Qantas Frequent Flyer members who reside in Australia or New Zealand who:

  • hold Platinum One, Platinum, Gold or Silver status and have not been able to earn the required Status Credits to retain their status;
  • have a status end date between 31 March 2021 and 31 December 2021(inclusive); and
  • have made a new booking to travel on at least one eligible flight. The booking creation date must be between 23 November 2020 and before the member’s current status end date of between 31 March and 31 December 2021. The flight must be booked to travel before 30 June 2022.

IME, the rollover takes a day or three.

Try checking in the mobile app, if you can; My digital card in there had been showing expiry as Aug 2021 up until last night, and then this morning, after all the SCs were cleared and the new (full) target retain numbers put up, I checked the card again, and now shows expiry as Aug 2022.

Cheers,
Matt.

Thanks Matt, but this - again - appears like SOP. If I hadn't re-qualified, my status would usually show as having been extended for a slew of days (to allow for any missing SCs to catch-up) before being snatched back). I don't expect this start-of-year to be too much different and - as such - was hoping to understand why others think that this extension of status to the end of the membership year is final so early at the start of this membership year especially - as others have said - when the rollover SCs have not appeared.

From what I understand, if you see the expiry date pushed out a year on the digital card, then you should be good for the year.

If you don't see it change on the card, then yes, you will fall down a peg a few days into the year.

Yep - and that’s what I see. It’s not a hangover of the old status; There’s a new expiration date on the card.

Rollover SCs for the new membership year as I had calculated showed up today :)

In that case it is different - and a welcome data reference - to the rest of the QF system. Here is one of the threads which discusses QF erroneously stating status has been extended only to snatch it away days into the new membership year: Gold yanked thoughts?

I consider the QF digital card as a reliable indicator (mine flipped over yesterday to 2022 as expected)

I do agree that there have been instances of the website suggesting status was extended ("Congratulations!") and then it not being - sometimes usually before the actual rollover. I don't know that happens (not an insider!) but the digital card has been a more reliable indication imo. I've never seen a report of the expiry shown then to not hold.

There's also the cases of status "hanging around" for a few days post rollover (which has previously been put down to QF having a grace period of a few days for SC's earned for flights at the end of the month to post and apply) but I consider that a different situation to when status has actually been extended per a promotion such as this.

my two cent.

I booked my flight as requested to gain the FIRST status extension. As I made a booking, I understand that this will suffice for the status extension, as per above.
Qantas advised me that my flight had been rescheduled from the morning to the afternoon of 9 September 2021. I have received 5 such communications. One told me "you'll need to accept these updates" via manage booking or the app. I have done nothing.
In my app, the morning flight is still there with "cancelled", so it is clear that Qantas cancelled the flight. Am I due a credit? Can I have both the extension and the credit?
Thanks for your help.
BTW I am in lockdown in CBR and the flight is to SYD.

You can get a full refund in this situation, or a travel pass with the various options as discussed elsewhere, or a flight credit (or accept changes).

whatever you decide will not affect your status extension imo.

As Qantas cancelled the flight, you will still receive your extension. However, ask for a refund or travel pass, not a credit. Using a credit, you will find fares are more expensive.

I seem to have gotten my status extension (digital card shows 2022), but none of my rollover status credits. Has anyone else’s not come through yet?

Thanks, guys. Got the refund. Will take 8 weeks!
