booking flights via amex travel and then cancelling

I see. I'm just confused by your original message.

"I got on the chat with Amex travel and they said because I had been able to change my booking online with Qantas when the flight was cancelled they no longer had control of it and I had to ring Qantas.

I was unable to change it online with Qantas because it said it was booked through a travel agent"

if you choose to cancel why didnt amex travel deal with you?
I originally had a flight in June which Qantas cancelled. Normally you can't change it on line but because it was a cancellation it let me do it but once I had done it then it wouldn't allow any more changes. Because the new flight was a couple of months after the original flight and Amex hadn't been involved they no longer had access to the booking and they told me to ring Qantas. When I rang Qantas they didn't even ask about it being a booking with a TA even though it was plastered all over My Booking on their website. I just said I wanted to cancel it because I couldn't travel there and they just offered a credit straight away. Hope this is clear enough but feel free to ask any more questions if I can help

Thanks for this excellent data point mate! Im curious if the outcome would be the same if i booked something today for a date within the current lock down period... and then called to say I cant take flight due to lockdown.
I don't see any harm in trying. Worst that can happen is that you loose the credit if the they deem the flight is not refundable, which you would do anyway if nothing is booked.

Have you also tried talking to the general Amex customer service to see if they would extend the expiry date of the credit? Might be a simpler process.

They have said no to everyone I know that has asked
