I received this video clip this afternoon. Apologies if it's been posted before - had a look, couldn't find anything.

This makes it look so very easy to take people's bags. A bit of a worry.

The Booster Bag Scam

JB

My wheels bag wouldn't fit in his "booster bag" and my other bag would stay on me, so not too much of a worry to me, bu do look forward to looking out for it...

Interesting. I'd be curious to see the inner workings ... it says spring loaded, but from what angle? I can't imagine if it's just from the side it could carry much weight without falling out the bottom. Also is there a trigger? Couldn't pick that up.

That was from a British show called the Real Hustle, not sure if it was ever showed in Australia. Although Channel 9 did there own remake of it a couple of years ago.

Are you thinking of making one?

Seriously though, I am very conscious of my bag where-ever I am so would like to think I would not be a target. Fingers crossed.

Ha when travelling I generally look the part of a dirty hippy backpacker, so doubt people would let me get that close :) Just curious about the mechanics of it all!

Interesting... I just don't see how'd it would work for business people with bags on wheels!

Just another reason why though you can't be too careful these day's, even in airport's with all there security

Interesting. Looks like they are available for sale:

As to how they work, I would imagine a two-piece hinged bottom supported by reasonably stout spikes with springs keeping it under tension so it tends to remain closed. Possibly a second or third set inside, higher up in the bag.

You wouldn't be too worried about scratching or damaging the target bag - it's the contents you want.

It would have to be a sturdy mechanism, as you don't want the target bag protruding out of the bottom of the booster. Looking at the video, there seems to be a bit of the captured bag visible underneath.

Regardless of how it works, I think that the lesson is to keep your bags secured. I had a friend visiting London, stopped for a coffee, put her bag down under the table with camera, passport etc. inside. She was able to view the security footage later on. Someone sat down opposite, kicked the bag further along under the table to where an accomplice picked it up and left.

Tourists are easy marks, because they are generally insured and aren't likely to get the police involved.

It's certainly an interesting scam... It does however fall apart if the bag you are picking up contains lead weights in it (or is at least otherwise heavier than expected), it also falls apart if the bag you are attempting to pick up is not as ridged as expected, and that could be quite embarrassing for the thief when someone else's bag "falls out of their bag".

I also strongly suspect that if your found to have such a bag (eg as your going through security, they x-ray the bag capturing bag and see it's not all as one would expect) assuming such things are not down right illegal which would stop you there and then, I expect that security would be radioing through to the guys in a security control room keep an eye on you like a hawk...

Of course, that does not save you if you are in a true public space (eg a cafe with tables on the side walk).

Harvy's tip. Always carry lead weight in your bag!

Actually, we went on a dive trip one time to WA and carried all our gear. Including the lead weights, haha. I think my carry on weighed about double what it should have as it had all our expensive regulators and what not in it.

Always keep your bag on you. If I'm at a counter (like the old couple) I would have my roll on in front of me or a brief case between my feet. Certainly not half a metre away out of my sight. But I'm a bit security conscious like that.
