Hi
don't know if this is the correct forum but I want to fly Brisbane to Alaska in June 2017 one way then Winnipeg /Brisbane in July 2017 one . Have over 200,000 QF points and happy to purchase AA points if you gurus reckon that is way to go. 2 of us oldies 65+ want to fly J or F

Any advice gratefully accepted

It sounds to me like you'll have enough Qantas points for one person (return), but not two people in J or F. So, you might need to purchase AA miles to make up for this shortfall. Alternatively, one person could buy a sale Business class ticket, or you could both travel one-way on paid fares. For example, you could return via Honolulu, flying AA F from Winnipeg to Honolulu, then Jetstar business class to Brisbane from Honolulu. That's probably the most cost-effective option overall and, mercifully, that Jetstar flight from Hawaii to Australia is a daytime flight.

I would also check the price and availability of award flights from Brisbane to Los Angeles only. It may work out better value to purchase paid tickets from Los Angeles-Alaska and Winnipeg-Los Angeles and save your points for the trans-Pacific flights. AA domestic F is relatively inexpensive, and redemptions require full First class points so not great value.

You'll probably need to book as soon as the seats are released in order to get availability. For QF, that's 353 days out.

Alaska Miles are another option. They have regular bonus point offers and are potentially better value post AA's devaluation. I think their stopover policy is more generous too
