Build us an App!

XenForo is a pretty modern platform

Any app would predominately be a browser skin anyway.

If you want an 'app' button, most mobile browsers have an Add to Home screen or equivalent menu option.
Maybe it's because I am not a paid subscriber and the ads interfere, but the site jumps all over the place, especially on my phone browser. Typing is very difficult.

My membership lapsed at the end of last month and the contrast was incredible -- I'm sorry to report that without a paid subscription, this site became downright annoying. Ads, pop-ups, unsolicited video box things... just annoying. I let out a huge sigh of relief when I renewed my membership.

If you spend a lot of time on this site, a membership is a no-brainer.

You sort of have to look at the history of AFF and apps to fully understand, but years ago there was an app when we used vBulletin. It was a skinned version of one provided by Tapatalk. It worked quite well at the time, some interesting features, but Tapatalk got too big for their boots and their business plan changed - they would have run their ads in the app to make money. This was the beginning of the end. After that an app was developed by an independent developer, but it was never polished enough. With the change to Xenforo and a much more modern interface that allowed for user interface elements to be dynamically sized on devices, AFF discontinued the app. There was some criticism at the time, but eventually users worked out that an app wouldn't do anything a browser or web app couldn't already do. The next point release of Xenforo is just around the corner, who knows how that may revamp things yet again.

Disclaimer: Sometimes I might say we when I mean AFF, as I used to work here but I am not part of the we anymore ;)

Strong disagree with OP. The site is well optimised for mobile and is a reasonably modern design.

If AFF wanted to be modern it wouldn’t be using forums at all, we’d be on discord.

I do love it when someone says "It works fine for me, so there's no problem".

Who said that? Don’t twist my words.

The whole point of this site is for people to share their opinions and experiences on a given topic, so a wide range of views can illuminate the issue, if any.

I’m not a paid subscriber but I don’t get ads. If ads are the issue great, let the team investigate that. Doesn’t mean we need an app (or that an app would fix the problem), nor does it mean the interface is from the 90s.

This is absolutely my experience when not signed in. As soon as I sign in and the ads disappear, the issue with the page jumping around as you scroll (due to different ads loading at different times) disappears.

Do you work on an IT helpdesk, perhaps?
Hey I did once! :)

It's a fair solution though, in my opinion. For people who pay for access it's smooth & works well, if you want it for free then something/someone/somehow needs to pay to keep the lights on, and I guess that's currently Superloop & Squarespace & Adobe & Disney & they change faster than I can type this so I'm stopping now. :)

Oh, not to mention the suggestive &/or soft-cough of a Temu ad ... what IS that thing that's shaped like that SUPPOSED to be?!

Agree from me; I'm a millennial and am strongly in the camp of "don't make me download an app for something that renders fine as a webpage".
