My family has an upcoming flight Melbourne to Cairns. My wife and I are in business class while our two sons ( 15yo, 17yo ) are in economy.

Would it be reasonable that all 4 of us use the business class check in counter ?

Yes, however you may find the line quite long. Personally I'd just check in online and drop my bags at the automated machines. If I need to speak to a person, I would do so at the lounge reception where the wait is often shorter.

I would only go to a manned check-in counter if I have an international connection or need to change my flight (with checked bags).
