Cant comment, havent flown them and havent had client fly them.

Hunt around and see if you can find a better price, there's still a decent margin in it even at that discounted price, so I suspect someone might have it lower again.

Do a search there have been some previous threads.

I believe the hard and soft (onboard) products are ok iirc (aircraft type pending), but if there's a delay, dont expect to gather much info / get outta wherever quickly....

Also, of course, the trip takes longer.....

Apologies for not searching harder - the very cheap J fares have come up before. Consensus seems it is an OK product & good price but a very scary safety record. Might brave it to / within Asia but rapidly going off the idea of doing long haul to Europe - still love to hear if anyone has actually done it though....

I personally wouldn't fly them, i'd be coughing up the extra cash and paying $5140 + taxes to fly JL in J.

Flew them Y in 1998 when they still had smoking on board.

Was pretty average then

To quote wp - Since 1970, the airline has averaged 6.44 fatal events per million flights, while the worldwide average is under 1.5.

While its a scary record, you still have a higher chance of death on the train/bus/taxi to the airport then flying on them.

Never tried China Airlines before but someone reliable told me recently that they are quite good. Their aircrafts are quite new - avg 7.3 years as advertised on their website.

No disagreement however when you have other options available a basic risk analysis says an airline that is four times (+) more likely to kill you is not really a good option :!:

China airlines is on the prohibited (must not) fly list for the company I am employed by.

I was told that it is good but I have no intention of flying them at all. Having to think about the safety of the aircraft or the skills of the pilots every time there is a turbulence on a long haul flight is a bit too much for me.

I flew with China Airways Business class in Aug `09 along with husband and 4yr old. We got a very good deal $3300 inc taxes and also extra discount for child.

We were told by the travel agent to go with the Frankfurt route as they were newer planes. We departed from Sydney -Taipei - Frankfurt then onto London with another airline.

The flight itself was good, modern plane no complaints. (I have flown bus class with abt 8 different airines) would compare to Jal/Thai - Qantas were in a different league but the price is double. CA use the Qantas lounge at Sydney.

I've flow whY on China Airlines SYD-YVR and it was a decent product

SYD-TPE was on a A340 and was a very modern jet with good IFE, TPE-YVR was on a 747 and was a bit dated (no VOD)
