Buying a cheap ski home in Japan

Hi there, this is amazing to read. Thank you so much for such an insight. We are in the early stages of researching. We want to buy something close to the ski fields, max 60k. Would you mind sharing the team you worked with in Japan to make this happen? Realtor etc. It’s all very overwhelming but exciting.

Interesting story and ties in with similar experiences on the ski.com.au forums. Most of the resorts popular with Australians have priced themselves out of the market for property.

Yuzawa is an interesting choice. I gather that the ski fields there, particularly Gala, are packed on weekends with daytrippers from Tokyo but fairly quiet during the week. Naeba and Kagura being nearby offers a bit of variety as well. I have a rugby club mate going skiing at Naeba in a few weeks' time so I'll have a chat to him when I get back to Australia.

As you would be aware from QF WP's trip report, I have been focussing on the Aizu region for my ski tours because of the good value for accommodation and lift tickets. The only real estate option there though would be to either buy an apartment in Inawashiro town (close to the locally owned ski field) or into the pension village just below Nekoma Mountain South Side (formerly ALTS Bandai). I haven't researched it but given that Inawashiro has experienced a population decline over the past 20 years I would suspect real estate prices are low.
 
I like the Yuzawa region, especially as the trains are included in the Tokyo Wide JR pass if you’re doing a day trip. Beautiful country be it winter or summer, was there Jan 18 2019 with Jr, and again in August this year.

It’s a long process that’s unique to Japan and the individual.

They are busier but not really packed on weekends.

We looked at houses but they come with a lot of maintenance issues that are available time and cost. Apartments come with fees but these are, to an extent, predictable.
 
I thought of buying a place in JPN like these but decided against it as we would not want to be only in the one place all the time.
The benefit of it being such an insignificant cost is that you aren’t tied down, the same way you might feel you need to make use of it.

$15k, in the scheme of multiple trips. Means I am happy to go elsewhere to ski still. I also have the “benefit” of little kids crippling my ability to tour much for a while, so having a large space, multiple bedrooms and a regular resort works for me.

If I was intelligent I would have bought when I started looking at land in Niseko in 2010; or when I was again looking at a large property in furano for 300k. Worth about 3-4 times that in only 5 years…
