Buying AA Miles

These days I don't buy miles speculatively, I only buy them when I need them.

In saying that this deal is tempting however I've got my trips planned out for the next 12 months.

Slightly off topic but we took advantage of the SPG offer to buy miles which were then transferred to Velocity with the attached bonuses - cost about $A900 after charges etc but THEN our bank charged us $A132 and treated it like a cash withdrawal which took the cost up to (let's round it up) approx $1000 for about 40,000 Velocity points = 2.5c/point - so is this still a good deal? We are not into getting new credit cards so find it hard to accumulate Velocity points apart from taking flights. Would appreciate any helpful comments and of course if admin want to transfer this post to another section, as newbies we're cool with that!

It comes down to what you personally value VFF points at. Personally I value them about 1.2-1.5 c.
I don't believe there is any reason your bank should treat the purchase as a cash advance as it was a purchase. You should dispute this with them.

I bought my son 1,000 AA miles to keep his stash alive. I tried to do the $25 donation but it didn't work after 3 attempts.

Another great way that I have recently found to keep AA points alive is via the blog on Awardwallet. Leave a comment and get 5 points, the 5 points is itself of no value but keeping the 1.2M stash alive is.

sorry to sound dumb - I've had an Award Wallet account for around a year.....can I leave a comment on any of the blog subjects on my Award Wallet account - then what? transfer the 5 points to my Advantage account?

If you already have an AA account linked under that AwardWallet account, when you post it will tell you where the points are going and it will just happen.

Can't do it as a single trip on CX or JL (meaning it costs more points). It can still be worth considering, though, particularly if you're inclined towards a stopover.

Have you been a member of AAdvantage for at least 30 days? That is a requirement prior to purchase.

stick a zero in front, or make it an american zip code (e.g. 90210 or 90245 the 'el segundo' method). might have more luck.

No. Haven't checked with the bank but don't think that's where the problem is. We think the rot set in when I tried to buy on the 29th day after joining (confused by the day difference between the USA and Oz) and that was rejected, of course. All other efforts either over the net or phone then failed. I wd get an email saying "processing", then "successful" and then it would be refunded after that but yesterday we purchased on my husband's a/c (same address, same postcode) and the sale went thru faultlessly. ?????????

I'm wondering if I should try to cancel the a/c and open a new one later. We can manage just fine on my husband's in the meantime as we are not likely to need more than 250,000 points in the next month lol.
