Has anyone purchased cut price tickets from Travel Agencies specialising in selling tickets to public using frequent flyer points purchased from Corporations and experienced any problems with their trips? I notice some advertised prices as 50% - 70% reduction on normal ticketed flights.

Thanks in anticipation,

How many "Corporations" get points.
Most FF programs give points to the Individuals, and there are also generally rules against selling points, which this seems to be.

Risky I would have thought.

I haven't heard of any such practice but it sounds extremely dodgy to me.

Maybe it's merely a scam & that's the line they're spinning to justify the alleged 50 - 70% off.

Do they accept credit cards for these fares or is this such a great 'deal' that they will only take cash?

Can't comment any further unless you provide info but my gut feeling is stay right away from this.

I've definitely heard of the practice in the US but don't think it's that common here. I don't think its a scam as such but the problem would be that most FF programs only allow transfer of points in certain situations (and these are likely to be 100% kosher under those conditions) so there are undoubted risks should you happen to get caught.

Having said this I'd rather get information of people who have actually done it than base on the nervousness of people who haven't, some of the best deals on this site and others sound too good to be true at first until investigated (e.g. US DM 100% promos, Lifemiles, PC ...).

Thanks for your responses. I should have stated that I have only seen these Travel Agencies advertise on net and they operate in US but sell these tickets for flights in and out of Australia.

I am aware of some people doing it in Melbourne, but not the finer details, other than its seems the "agent" is using a corporate deal with a North American program (a program not often mentioned on AFF, so no people, its not US or AA).

However, I am unaware if the agent coordinating it is in Australia.

The local Australian network of users does seem to be growing, and I know of people who have successfully travelled on these tickets. They are paying in the range of 50% off the full J prices, but are not earning FF miles on flights.

I note: A key component of many North American FF programs is that, although, redemptions may be made for anyone (i.e. ticket holders don’t have to be related family members) these tickets may not be bartered, traded or otherwise sold for profit: Which would seem to be the case in these arrangements.

The question is whether anything more than lip service is paid to this provision, as FF program management revenue/profit goals would seem to be at odds with restricting the practice, resulting in a blind eye being turned?

As burmans said, ask more questions directly from people who have used this service, for a better assessment.
