Buying Points

So I bought a bunch of points, have redeemed some on a couple of stays on points + pay. Also assigned the price difference (full asking price - actual paid price) to the points asked eg 20,000.

Anyway, I managed to break even. The amount I had spent on purchasing points, and using them, but still had a few tens of thousands of points left over to play with. Those extra points I view as being the same as points earned. I.e. I didn't pay for them. Even though it's early learnings for me, no matter how I use them, they're still going to save me $$ and that is the end game for me. Less $$ out of my back pocket. I think if I had to work out numbers, beyond the above, then that would do my head in. I realise some places may not be great redemptions but then you run into issues like dates not working out and maybe holding out for another sale (who knows if it will come in time). It makes it hard to book anything!

I think I will keep the math to making sure I break even on purchased points, and the left over I'll spend if/when the occasion arises, good or bad redemption. It still means I'm paying less.

I don't think I mind buying points if a bonus is on of 60% and above. At least they're in the account when a sale comes around.

Or is this view too simplistic?

There's another 80% off on now.

Can someone please confirm whether this is correct?
Conrad Seoul - 123917 KRW (approx 140 AUD) + 24000 points.
I need to purchase points which will cost me $110 USD = 145 AUD.

So a total of 140 + 145 = $285/night.

Does the above calculation seem right? Any costs I may be missing? The Hhonors discount advance purchase rate for that night is $375 AUD.

Without checking exchange rates, your formula is the same as I use.
Sometimes points + pay is cheaper and I have used this myself.

That said, I only buy points when there is a 100% offer but if 80% is working for you then go girl.
