So I bought a bunch of points, have redeemed some on a couple of stays on points + pay. Also assigned the price difference (full asking price - actual paid price) to the points asked eg 20,000.
Anyway, I managed to break even. The amount I had spent on purchasing points, and using them, but still had a few tens of thousands of points left over to play with. Those extra points I view as being the same as points earned. I.e. I didn't pay for them. Even though it's early learnings for me, no matter how I use them, they're still going to save me $$ and that is the end game for me. Less $$ out of my back pocket. I think if I had to work out numbers, beyond the above, then that would do my head in. I realise some places may not be great redemptions but then you run into issues like dates not working out and maybe holding out for another sale (who knows if it will come in time). It makes it hard to book anything!
I think I will keep the math to making sure I break even on purchased points, and the left over I'll spend if/when the occasion arises, good or bad redemption. It still means I'm paying less.
I don't think I mind buying points if a bonus is on of 60% and above. At least they're in the account when a sale comes around.
Or is this view too simplistic?
