Hey,

I was just wondering if QF allows you to buy status, I'm a NB but I wanted to buy a PS or SG membership as I don't fly enough to earn it by status credits.

DJ allow it, you think QF would somewhere! Just has to be found

Whats your insight?

Cheers,

Josh

This is a no and a yes answer. No you can not buy PS or SG. But you can buy 80-99% (Depending on how and where you travel) of what you get as a SG.

Fly - The Qantas Club

So you think QF should sell status? How much do you think QF should sell Gold status? Some people can spend AUD10,000+ per year and still not make Gold due to travelling in business class and being time poor.

Are you prepared to spend that much money for status? Or do you think you should be able to buy status for a couple of hundred dollars?

Of course they do, it just has some conditions. You pay for the ticket, then you have to sit in a metal tube in the sky for a while.

How much are you willing to pay? I am sure you can effectively buy CL status if you have a large enough budget to direct to QF :p

Isn't is called the Qantas Club....? Works fine for most people.

How does DJ allow you to buy Gold or Silver status (without flying)?

QFF might not be the best FFP out there, but I think they still have some integrity, such as not allowing status to be purely bought without actually stepping onto a plane.

So in short - can you buy QFF status (without stepping on a plane)? No.

You can buy Qantas Club - as some others suggested - which gives you a swag of the benefits offered to PS and SG. Benefits not offered in purchasing Qantas Club vs. earning SG are oneworld benefits, points loading, improved award seat visibility and some others (written and unwritten).

I know you can 'buy' AA status (well, lifetime status anyway) without stepping onto a plane.

Short answer: Yes for FF, No for Credit Status

Long Answer:
My understanding of QFF, there are 2 components: FF points and credit status.

With FF points, you can buy point (i.e top-ups) but only up to a number of points within a year and a portion of your current accumulated point.

With Credit Status (Silver, Gold, Plat), you'd need to actually fly on QF code flights to earn your credit. I think you need 600 for Silver, 800 for Gold and 1400 for Platinum. Once you earned the status, to retain it, you'd need to get a minimum status (Silver 400, Gold 600, Plat 1200). The credit status is reset at your anniversary date.

Dat

Can fly on ANY OW airline to get SC's (considering it's the right booking class. i don't think that you get SC's on all CX flights? Can someone help me out with that one?) Just have to do the minimum 4 QF flights per membership year.

I don't think you can fly with OW member & get credit status for QF, unless the tix is on QF code. I fly to HK via CX sometimes and got no mileage/status, except upgrade.

You get SC's for every eligible OW flight you fly on. There are certain booking codes that do not earn mileage or SC's

Frequent Flyer - About the Program - Terms & Conditions

You need 350 to reach PS (300 to retain), 700 to reach SG (600 to retain) and 1400 to reach WP (1200 to retain).

Just make sure the fare code you are booking on (in regards to CX) is one of the ones listed on the above table, and that you are flying on CX metal.

Of course you can buy status with Qantas (don't listen to the nahsayers). In fact, qantas are so generous they even throw in a free flight with your status. But they do take it as an insult to their giving nature if you don't take the flight and in that situation they then refuse to give you the status.

It's very simple, just fly J and F everywhere and you'll get similar treatment as SG \ WP...

Alternatively purchase QP and that'll get you almost SG treatment in Y as well.

Has to be in the right booking class to earn miles and SC. You most probably got a very cheap fare, which doesn't earn anything.

But, you do earn miles on member OW airlines, thats the point of the OW membership and Alliance.

You can ring the service centre and ask, they will give you the prices, I have done it already (was about $300 with an expriy of Dec 31, 2011)

Well as others have mentioned you can buy status on QF. It involves a $ element and a time element (to sit in a metal tube for hours on end to prove you are serious about getting status)

Based on a number of threads on AFF, going rate for QF status (from scratch) are:

Silver $700-$2100
Gold $1400-$4200
Platinum $2800-$8400

note: the low end may be difficult to get, whilst the high end of these rates should be easy to get

Included in these rates is free alcohol and food whilst spending that time in a metal tube.;)

If the booking class is eligible for QFF award points earning, then on a OW carrier you generally earns SC's.

This earning is in line with the following table:

Frequent Flyer - About the Program - Airline Earning Table

I guess your booking class for CX was ineligible. Only the following classes on CX flight numbers earn on QFF: BHKLMV, Y, CDIJ and AF.

+1
Last membership year I spent $5k on QF, maybe more, and was still only Silver. PER-SYD return, 40SC, ~ $500. 10 trips = 400SC and $5k.

Platinum $2800-$8400

How can WP be achieved from NB for only $2800, if your in AU? Using Y-UP's in the US it could be possible, but even then...

(Depending on the answer I see a status run coming up... :D)

Opportunity has now passed, but in reality from Australia it is more like $3500, as you would have needed to get to SIN to do CX status runs in J SIN-HKG-BKK-HKG-SIN @ ~ $2/SC. CX runs do come and go from various Asian destinations from time to time, I don't know if there are any from anywhere at the moment.

You have bought Silver or Gold Status from DJ for close to 2 years for $300?

I don't think so as it costs $4,000+ worth of flights to achieve Silver status and $9,000+ worth of flights to achieve Gold status for 1 year. Why would DJ sell you status for $300?

I almost certain you did not buy status from DJ and that price even sounds cheap for lounge membership as well. Just wondering what you actually purchased?
