Hi All

Freshly minted Platinum here. I'm planning to book an Economy fare with American Airlines (DFW to Montreal via Philadelphia) next month. Booking says no checked baggage included. AA website seems to indicate I'm eligible for three checked bags as Oneworld Emerald: https://www.aa.com/i18n/travel-info/baggage/checked-baggage-policy.jsp

Is my understanding correct? Does this apply even though the fare is booked Qantas Rewards?

Cheers

With your QFF# in the booking, as with a reward ticket, you should be recognised as OWE and get that allowance.

As OneWorld Emerald you should be entitled to 3 checked bags at no charge.

1st, 2nd and 3rd checked bags are complimentary for:

  • Confirmed Flagship® First and Flagship® Business Plus customers*
  • AAdvantage Executive Platinum® status
  • AAdvantage Platinum Pro® status
  • oneworld® Emerald
  • Active U.S. military and / or dependents with ID traveling on orders (1st - 5th bags free of charge
  • Active U.S. military with ID on personal travel
Full details at AA (https://www.aa.com/i18n/travel-info/baggage/checked-baggage-policy.jsp)

Congrats on reaching OWE!

AA website seems to indicate I'm eligible for three checked bags as Oneworld Emerald

A word of caution with Oneworld and its alliance members updating their respective statuses in the back end of the system. AA tends to update at the end of the month/first week of the new month - so if you have recently gotten to Platinum with Qantas, it might not show up in the system.

When getting to the gate, it is up to the discretion of the supervisor to waive the fees (as they should) or force you to pay and tell you to submit a refund on their website - make sure you get the receipt for this! Qantas tried pushing it again from their end to reflect in the Oneworld system; however, for whatever reason, AA's system does not pick it up. Alaska Airlines and Japan Airlines reflected within 24 hours.

Note, staff are also under the assumption that their AA Platinum Pro (our QF WP equivalent) is still Sapphire (it used to be) and not Emerald. Called out a supervisor for this antics, asking if the official communications published back in 2021 by AA themselves is wrong. Doubled down their printout from 2017 is the most up-to-date they haven't been told otherwise... good to see when the left hand doesn't speak to the right hand.

Apologies for bringing this thread up once again but do have some questions that I don't see answered here. In particular, I plan on flying LAX to DTW on AA booked as a classic award in economy. When I make the booking I will still be Platinum. However, when I travel I will be bumped down to Gold. It is my understanding that I will continue to have the Platinum baggage allowance of 3 bags based on AA's policy, correct? Second, what is the baggage weight limits for these free checked bags? The website suggests it's 23 kg, but I get the sneaking suspicion it might be 32 kg.
