Indonesia will consider banning all alcoholic beverages and putting drinkers in jail for two years.
The Islamic-based United Development Party, a member of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's governing coalition, has drafted and submitted its Bill for a Ban on Alcoholic Drinks to the national parliament, which has decided to include it on the country's national legislation program for 2013.
The strict ban would be "applied nationwide within the territory of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia", the bill says.

Wow, that would change the look of Kuta. No drunk Aussies making fools of themselves anymore. I'm sure the mushrooms would still keep them coming back.

I can see Bali getting an exemption if this ever came to fruition. So much money flows through the place and even the meager taxes applied to alcohol make a difference to the country's bottom line. Plus the tourism industry would die ... Along with the livelihood of thousands of Balinese families.

Spot on RWJ777 and it won't take too long before for the nutters who rule Islamic countries will be looking for some one to blame when their economy hits the toilet. Toursim will simply shift to saner, non dogmatic countries in the region, e.g. Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia. Phillipines and life will go on. Ever heard of tourists hitting the hot spots of Brunei? ( now there's an oxymoron) Bali will sink without a trace.

No alcohol in Bali = no (or a significant drop) tourists = no money = won't happen!!

I hope this never occurs!

Having all the bogans gather in one place is great.....makes it easy to avoid them:D

I'm going with even if this gets through, Bali will be exempt from these new laws.

Bali doesnt have quite as much Oil as Brunei, so no.

My money is on no change in Bali, regardless of the outcome. Even if Bali is not exempt, hotels will be, or something like that.

I would be happy if they just took it off the street. The UAE look after the tourist and allow alcohol in hotels, bars and certain restaurants. If Indonesia want change it should be something similar to keep the tourist $ flowing

I wonder why the Balinese just declare independence from those idiots from in Jakarta.

If they ban locally produced Balinese wines, many will be very happy. :)

From my understanding quite a number of Indonesian Government & family officialdom have property & business interests in Bali. I'm sure (in the larger spectrum) they would like to maintain their 'income" stream.
Much of Indonesia is so economically segregated especially for Bali.
I guess everyone want a piece of the vibrant Bali economy, including alcohol sales, therefore I can't see it happening in the short term.
Just a thought..

Don't forget if you don't stay in Kuta the drunk bogans thin out significantly, that's why I don't even go into Kuta when I go, it's far to depressing.

Significant 'Cultural Awareness Observations" at times in Kuta

Hong Kong had different status to mainland China (perhaps not so much now). Bali will not change too much.
