What exactly is the fascination with Bali apart from Bogans?

There is the zoo tour (see schapelle in the cage) ... apart from that. Hmm I am struggling to think of any in that part of Indonesia. Supposedly there are very nice parts of ubud... but escaping the bogans could be difficult.

I don't think it will happen. There seem to be a lot of oddball laws put up by some of the smaller parties and they never turn into anything. The impact to tourism would be too big. Also I don't think the Indonesian government will let go of all that excise tax.

You don't have to go far out if Kuta to escape the bogans. There are some beautiful parts of Bali and the people and food are wonderful. The best satays I have eaten were at a road side stall at Kediri

Whilst I don't rate the beaches highly at all (how can anyone from WA?), I would go occasionally for a relaxing, short resort holiday. I.e 4 hours flight then into the Conrad/Laguna and basically not leave until it's time to catch the flight home. The weather is nice and there's not as much wind so you can just swim and relax all day.

My money is on no change in Bali, regardless of the outcome. Even if Bali is not exempt, hotels will be, or something like that.

This is the case in Brunei, at least it was when I stayed at the Sheraton there.

Maybe banning methanol in Bali might be a better idea. Story in the Telegraph today. Ive seen this happen in Bali - pretty serious stuff.

Which means the bogans find somewhere else to go? :(

This ban will never happen as tourism in Indonesia will nose dive without alcohol.
