We're ok with humidity. I think the last time we were in Thailand, it was like 98% humidity (or there abouts). Sweating buckets!

Is Hilton cairns generally accepted as being the best hotel up there then? Heading up next Easter with the gf on free flights with Amex reserve c/card so will have a few extra $'s to play with.

Snap...I just had 5 nights up north with my wife using the same free flights.

What is best?

We stayed in Port Douglas ant at The Sea Temple. Port Douglas Accommodation | Sea Temple Resort & Spa Port Douglas | Port Douglas Resorts

Was certainly good. We had a private pool complete with outdoor bbq area & garden, outdoor lounge, plus a full lounge and kitchen. So a lot more space and amenity's than most 5 star rooms :) The wife certainly liked it, as she described our trip as likea second honeymoon...so a few brownie points earnt!!!!

Other options include swim-in room as well. But we preferred our more private set-up.....and we could still swim in the big pool anyway.

I like Port Douglas as it has more of a village feel. But still has ample restaurants, several bars anda good pub with live music in the Court House Hotel. However if you both want to drink more than .05 staying an easy walk from Macrossan Street is a good idea, as that is where virtually all the restaurants and night life is.

But if you want raging night-life then Cairns has more options.

I have also rented houses on the Cairns northern beaches, and at Mission Beach (south of Cairns) and these are good options too if you like a bit of space.

So what is best, will in part be determined by what type of holiday you want. Remember that Cairns itself is a city on mud-flats, and not sandy beaches.
One of the northern beaches, Palm Beach has a few options too. But is quiet.

To get to Port Douglas, which is less than an hour away, we rented a car for 5 days which only cost $206. So used that for day-trips etc too, as well as airport transfers.

Cairns - Hilton, Pullman

Palm Cove - Sea Temple (plus some nice private apartment rentals)

Port Douglas - Sea Temple, Sheraton (eat at Nautilus or Harrison's).

IMHO.
