Was that before Qantas introduced iupgrades to the gate?
No. I was last to board as the gate staff made final efforts to upgrade me because they knew there were so many empty LAN seats

pjm99au, YES! I got the upgrade - at approx t-72hrs - not sure exactky when it happened. I have been checking every six or so hours for the past few days, as if I got it I wanted to immediately try to get seats 1A/B. I had written to the P1 team a few days back asking if they could hold 1A/B as I believed I would get the upgrade ( coughy :) ) but they said that they could not. But the fact I got those seats immediately allocated without my further request makes me suspect that something I did, or the P1 team did, enabled that. In any case am very happy.

Just for those of us that live on small scraps of facts in our constant strive to "understand the system" (which BTW in my opinion is harder than reaching the last levels of Buddhism), I noticed immediately after I saw that I was upgraded (there were two of us), the fare availability as per expertflyer for QF went from J8 to J6. Which obviously makes sense. The availability in J for LA increased from 2 to 3 - I assume a cancellation.

But now with pjm's figures, this has obviously changed during the day, and 2 more QF J seats have disappeared, but I also think 2 PE seats have become available - so I suspect two PE buyers (probably WP) got upgrades.

It is a messy world. But I got what I wanted. I am not sure exactly how I got it, but think I have a rough idea. To the average traveller they have NO CHANCE.

And like that, the frustration disappears.

my concern (certainly first row of the plane was desire that is first world problem) was that I would get the upgrade but not get my seats. I know, i recognize, that this could be seen as ego or something. But to me, as a very FF, two seats are NOT the same. I did not want just the upgrade. I wanted certain seats.

I know that some would see this as prissy, but sorry, in my world, doing a longhaul in a centre of three seats is NOT flash, even if an upgrade. We all get tainted by our expectations. And by God I have paid for my expectations....

No. I was antsy when Qantas changed our J seats for some random reason that I’d carefully researched and selected. I get it.

I agree ... I knocked back a Y->PE op up on QF8 simply because the Y seat situation I hadwas better.
