Just want to say "thanks a lot" (NOT!) to the person who now has my video camera, which my husband accidentally left behind in the overhead locker on a recent Virgin flight.

Incidentally, Virgin Lounge staff in Melbourne were very helpful in trying to locate the camera once we realised we'd lost it (a few days after our flights) but when we had phoned Virgin's general number and spoken to lost property prior to that, they said it was a lot of work to look back on the 2 flights we'd taken and they'd call us back (which they never did).

In our general experience, Virgin Lounge staff and facilities are much better than Qantas.

I think you can be reasonably confident that if any other passenger found it they would have handed it over to VirginBlue personnel. The honesty of VirginBlue's cleaning contractors or Lost Property handlers is therefore called into question. As you know where you left it, it's more than reasonable for you to treat the camera as stolen rather than lost. Report it to the police - you'll have to do that for insurance claims anyway. Incidently, if your household contents insurance includes personal effects cover, it might be covered under that (it certainly extends to items left in cars, etc).

Thanks, that's something I hadn't thought of. Unfortunately we didn't have travel insurance, but I'll look into the household contents side of things.

I think you must live in the land of make believe if you think "any other passenger" would have handed it to DJ staff.

Last Thursday 14/2/08 on landing in OOL from SYD I noticed a male passenger drag his backpack from the overhead and at the same time took hold of a small clutch bag, and as he walked from the ac he held the clutch bag against his chest, cover by his backpack. Now call me suspicious, but this seemed strange so followed him out of the terminal where I saw him checking the contents of the bag. As I have no time whatsoever for pieces of cough like this who do these things, so I notified the incident to the two uniform police standing inside the terminal doorway. In brief, they spoke with him, searched him, found the bag, arrested him, located the owner and then took him away in the Police car. I will probably have another trip to OOL to give evidence, but that's life. So, I don't know where you get your evidence, or opinion, that the honesty of DJ staff or DJ baggage handlers can be called into question. No doubt, you know more than I about these things, and I am only talking about one incident.

Well done MACCA. so many others may not have noticed, OR even cared for that matter... I only hope you are on one of my flights if it happens to me....

CHEERS!

:)

(PS - I am still trying to track down my hands free unit left in a rental car....anyone......)

Well done Macca, where were you when my laptop gained legs in the QP two weeks ago in Melbourne :(

Exceptional Macca!:D :D :D Not only noticing but also taking action! The things people think they can get away with these days:evil:

I'll have to take more care of my laptop (in easily recognisable backpack) that I often leave unattended for a few minutes in the QP while I grab food or take a comfort break...

This might lead to another thread, or there maybe one already.

I have always felt comfortable (until now) leaving my goods unattended while going to the bar or bathroom etc whilst in the lounge or the QP... might have to pay a little more attention now.

A little dissappointing. I had always considered that the lounge/QP were one of the final places you could leave something unattended and not be concerned about theft.

As a person who works in the service industry and often gets left in peoples houses and offices alone and unattended, I really take offence at people assuming that we are the crooks - HELLO :!: , this means our livelihood and why would i take a $2 coin, a $50 note or a $300 camera or whatever. We get paid more than that per week (im assuming - well i certainly do anyway!) so why would we take it? There are many other dishonest people out there who would take stuff in a heartbeat as it isnt in their job scope.

I would like to think that i am one of the most honest people out there and if i see anything or whatever i either dont touch it or give it back. I am a big fan of do unto others etc.

Now hopefully i dont slip off my soapbox when i go to step off but i felt i needed to say it.

I personally have not had anything stolen from me while on a plane - I am also reasonably careful with my goods and if traveling with more than my usual (my laptop bag), I try and somehow keep the items together even if by looping the straps together - just to remind me I am doing something different. It is seldom I carry a camera bag with me, but if I do, I usually pack it in my main luggage - I have an EOS with a couple of attachments and the bag is sized well enough to fit in my main luggage.

I have however on numerous ocassions been the subject of blazen thieft by car rental companies - the most recent being in Mackay where the AVIS desk was unattended and I deposited the keys in the slot and made a run for my flight - I realised after boarding that I had left a HUGO BOSS jacket in the boot. As soon as I could, I rang AVIS Mackay and informed them of the item - they said they would go and check as the car had been taken for cleaning - guess what, I am 1 HUGO BOSS jacket less...

I have also had stolen my iPod radio tuner (for the car), 2 pairs (on seperate ocassions) of sun glasses (1 x oakley and 1 x Ray Ban) and other items...

I know they are stolen because when the cleaners get to the cars, they know that Santa didn't leave them a gift, it was the last hirrer of the car!

Moral of the story I guess and also going back to the first post is that we as frequent travelers need to take better care of our goods and not rely on others having the same morals that we have in regards to others property.

I believe that 99.999% of the public are honest, and its just the other rare few that create all the problems. I remember my father saying once that the only accepted form of stealing is what you can keep away from the tax man.

Also, a few people have congratulated me for doing what I did with the pax who stole the clutch bag from the overhead locker, and although now retired I was in the NSW Police for 26 years, so this was nothing. What dissappoints me is that people see things happen and don't have the guts to do anything about it, and this is why theives get away with so much.

Funnily enough I hired a car from Avis a few years ago, and a day into the rental I went to put something into the cwentre console and there was a wallet in it. I was shicked, so much for cleaning the cars between usage. So I pulled out the wallet (had lots and lots of cash in it) found the guys business card and rang him. He was very casual about the whole thing, saying he rung Avis and they had got it out of the car and were sending it back to him. I said thats strange as I am currently holding it. To cut a long story short I went to the post office and mailed it back to him, using some of the cash for the postage, putting ahnge and receipt in the package.

Shicked? So he left his razor as well?

It is weird sitting here at the SYD Qantas Lounge, after arriving from BNE, reading through this thread and hearing an announcement that a Nokia mobile phone has been handed in to the service desk and if someone is missing the mobile phone to go the service desk....

I don't consider this stealing, just returning the part which is rightfully mine ;)

I think the other reason is that most people just don't notice these sorts of things.

Now I know why I instinctively jump up really quickly after landing and lay claim to my bag in the locker! Needless to say, I'll keep on doing this. Pays to get an aisle seat to do this. Mmm - you have to wonder about some people. BTW - goodonya, Macca! :D

Just wanted to add to the "well done Maca" great work.

And i agree - it'll be a Pax, not ground crew. It's not worth their job.

You have to be careful with overhead luggage AT ALL TIMES during a flight. Last year when I was on a SYD LAX flight, halfway through the night someone on the opposite side of the cabin begun opening overhead storages and rifling around in seats far away from his own. The cabin was dark and I was one of the only people awake. Once I began staring at him in a highly suspicious manner he seemed to stop and go back to his seat. I guess on night flights, you can't really be assured that someone is going to keep an eye on overhead luggage compartments and why they may need to be opened.
