Can I add *A Gold status to Y redemptions?

I booked 2 redemption tickets on Singapore Airlines in Y on the way back from Europe next year (on the way over I could find C seats but no luck on the way back)

We have no status on SQ (ff points come from credit card spending) but we are both *A Gold with United. Under "manage my bookings" I cannot add a frequent flyer number from another Star Alliance partner.

I assume we can still get priority boarding & lounge access by showing our UA Gold cards, but are we missing out on any other perks (eg seat selection, upgrades)?

If yes, is there a way (call centre?) to add another frequent flyer number to the booking?

It's a bit annoying that they don't always show the other frequent flyer options.

I discovered a strange work-around where I first had to add Krisflyer numbers to the passengers (even though no status), then in each person's krisflyer account profile, I had to add the related card under "Partner programmes".

I was then able to turn on auto-checkin, and as part of that process was offered a drop-down of other frequent flyer partners for each passenger, where I could enter in my card with status. Phew.

Awesome, your work-around using auto-checkin did the trick, thank you :)

Having said that, *A Gold still didn't give us access to Forward Zone seats for free, it looks like that's only for KrisFlyer Gold or higher :(

There are a couple of "tricks" us frequent flyers use to add our *A Gold status to a booking made using another FF program. One thing I'll do is simply call the frequent flyer program or operating airline of the sector I want my status added to. Other times, I can make the change by going to manage my booking of the airline or in the case of United simply adding the trip to my MileagePlus profile (where I hold Premier Gold status).

This is one of the big drawbacks of the Star Alliance frequent flyer program. Very little in terms of reciprocal benefits. Star Alliance Gold gets you maybe an extra bag, lounge access, priority check-in and boarding and that's it. Meanwhile as a Qantas Gold (OneWorld Sapphire) frequent flyer I can choose preferred seating on most partners free of charge. And don't get me started with Star Alliance Silver which gets you a higher pecking order on standby and that's it. Contrast that with Qantas Silver (OneWorld Ruby) where you get business class check-in. And the cherry on top? OneWorld Emerald (Qantas Platinum and Platinum One) where you get first class everything on top.
