Can I afford to wait until December for a last-minute Christmas family holiday?

Just "planning" a Christmas holiday for the family (self, wide and two mid-teen boys). I'm not sure of my work commitments and don't want o lock-in (or miss out)! For SE Asia or South Pacific destinations, am I risking getting nothing if I wait for a last-minute deal? Has anyone waited until a few days before Christmas and booked a Club Med or similar? Don't know what to do..............

Depending upon where in SE Asia, 'good' accomodation will be the challenge. What I tend to find is left is the tier 2 or 3 properties. We like to use boutique type vs the large chain hotels. I guess just jump on some of the usual travel sites e.g expedia where you can easily see prices for flights and beds.

Happy & safe travels.

I ended up doing a Sydney Gold Coast combo with NYE in Sydney (expensive two days). Will get double status credits with VA and as such Platinum, so that's the plan. SE Asia will have to be next year. I'm with you on boutique hotels vs big chains.
