Title says it all. Need to make a purchase which requires the use of a bank cheque. Was wondering if it's possible to use an AMEX issued card to buy a bank cheque from one of the big four to get some points? Thanks.

Whilst I don't know for sure, I think you'll find the answer is either:

1. No; or

2. Possibly, but it will not accumulate points as it will be treated as a cash advance.

Actually, I seem to recall reading on here that Amex no longer offer cash advances, so the likely answer is no. Banks require cleared funds/cash for the purchase of a Bank cheque.

Agree with AdMEL.

The bank will required cleared funds which must be provided before this issue of the cheque. Conventionally this is done by debiting an account with the bank issuing the cheque, or by the buyer using cash.

Debiting an Amex would therefore not meet their requirements, or if it did would need to be treated as a cash advance.
You can be sure the bank will not be absorbing any "Merchant Fee."

You can always ask, but I suspect the answer will be No.

If you could buy a bank chq wirh Amex (I think answer would be no) you could earn an unlimited amount of FF pts!

I paid off a loan using my CC once and it was treated as a Cash Advance.

The few points I gained was lost with the surcharge.

Thanks for the responses. Looks like the punters are the losers as usual. :-( So hard to earn points even when you want/need to spend.

Not sure how? but even if you can, the fee for a bank cheque will outweigh the points you could earn so it won't be a worthwhile loophole. I was merely thinking it could be an added bonus to earn some points in my circumstance where I have to use a bank cheque to make a payment.
