I'm about to book a O/W Business Advantage redemption ticket from SYD to Europe via SIN for next year.

Unfortunately my preferred flight SYD to SIN is not available (showing Waitlist) so in order to confirm the booking I need to pick an earlier flight meaning a long layover in SIN. The SIN to Europe leg is available.

Q: if I ticket the Advantage award, can I then waitlist the SYD-SIN leg for the later flight? If yes, do I need to call or can this be done online?

You will need to book the available itinerary; then regardless of whether it is Saver or Advantage, you can waitlist other flights (pending you have enough points in your account). Once the waitlist comes through, you will need to call, confirm the waitlisted flight and drop the one you no longer want. You'll need to pay a change or cancellation fee (from memory is about USD25 for business class).

Thanks. Would I be able to waitlist only the first leg or would I need to waitlist the full itinerary?

I think you waitlist whatever flight you want and then (once it is confirmed) ask the phone agent to replace the one you don't want with this one. I am not sure how married segments work in this scenario though.
